rhianna or whatever her name is.

i find her overt sexual nature really distasteful, and her voice is not all that either.
everytime she is on the radio or tv i turn over. i don't want my dc's exposed to a singer like that.

give me beyonce or the saturdays any day they are more wholesome and less about sex all the time

I only just saw the part of the OP that says The Saturday's are wholesome.

She is very talented. Even if you don't like her image, give her that much.

She reminds me of the girls in that BBC3 'Snog,Marry,Avoid' thing. Very overtly sexual to cover a lack of self confidence.

ScarlettAlexandra · 02/04/2012 11:42

i said more wholesome. BTW trinity i love paloma faith. she is what pop music should be heading towards.

i didn't say ri ri was a slag i don't know what happens in her bed, but the image she portrays is very sexual.

I think you're doing your DC's a disservice by not exposing them to real music instead of the pop music shite
Does this mean you think Rihanna isn't pop music???

festivalwidow · 02/04/2012 14:09

Don't get me started....
I can't bear the over-sexualisation of the music industry, women being portrayed as objects (from the Snoop Dogg videos of women's behinds to female singers wearing nowt in their videos and warbling about gagging for a shag - ah, but it's empowering dontcha know... Hmm)

And of course it's perfectly acceptable to have overtly sexual lyrics played at all hours, but anything political and the radio/TV stations will only play it after the 'watershed'. The industry has always been cynical but it does seem to have got worse recently.

Even All Saints made a point of dressing 'down' in combat trousers IIRC.

Hyperballad · 02/04/2012 14:27

I love Ri Ri! Seen her live twice and she was great!

Also in interviews she comes across as really grounded and a nice girl, same can't be said for a certain Ga Ga IMO.

Think you do the right thing in turning over when she come on TV, if you don't like it, why watch it!

Kayano · 02/04/2012 14:31

Beyonce is
Ok?

Even though you can film her
(in a sexual nature) on your videophone?

They are all gorgeous, talented, charming, hard working and well behaved. The only fly in the ointment is Rihanna's unspeakable taste in men. Beyond that, if my daughter were to turn out like any of them I should be thrilled, totally.

OriginalJamie · 02/04/2012 14:58

she sings through her nose

Sausageeggbacon · 02/04/2012 15:12

If you want a great female singer (going back a few years) try Pat Benatar, she wrote 2 great songs about child abuse which I always choke a little over but she sent such a strong message lyrically with the songs "suffer the little children" and "hell is for children".

As to the modern stars very few di anything for me but DD likes Alicia Keys and she is one of the few of that type I can listen to.

msrisotto · 02/04/2012 15:14

I'm honestly shocked that some people think the way rihanna, beyonce etc sell themselves/are sold is acceptable let alone desirable.

pictish · 02/04/2012 15:16

Oh she's crap isn't she?
I couldn't care less about her raunchy image...I just find her songs and her voice totally uninspiring.

Gunznroses · 02/04/2012 15:23

Rhianna's voice gives me a headache! its like an axe been ground slowly into the temple, and there's always the part where " it" needs to be harder, faster......then i either switch it off (dependimg where i am") or reach for the pain killers.

IAmBooyhoo · 02/04/2012 15:24

Eugh @ calling other women 'slags'. disgusting. how you can justify saying that to your children and then complain about the over sexualisation of show business is beyond me.

Hyperballad · 02/04/2012 15:27

Msrisotto, take it you don't like Jay Z either then?! :)

ripsishere · 02/04/2012 15:31

I am ambivalent to her. I quite like her music (and that of Katy Perry) and I am old enough to be a granny.
I haven't ever seen any videos of her - we don't get a music channel I don't think.
If you are that upset by her dress/lyrics/attitude keep your DC away from the telly.
Angry that someone calls her a slag. How old are you?

PostBellumBugsy · 02/04/2012 15:37

I like her music & I think she has a good voice - but I am no expert.

I watch the music channels with my DCs & we do talk about the videos. I'd rather watch it with them & have a chat about it, than pretend it isn't going on or try and ban them from seeing it.

I'll be honest & say I haven't the energy to campaign against the absurd over-sexualisation of young women (and young men) in pop videos - so I don't the next best thing (IMO) which is to raise awareness with my DCs.

Chilenachica · 02/04/2012 15:40

My DDs are disgusted with her, and all the others. They do like the songs but can't understand why the "ladies" need to dance around almost nude. They did start to think that being famous is fantastic, but luckily they've seen it close up. A classmate's mum is a "model" and now a local TV celeb. Said classmate hardly ever sees mum who is frequently to be seen on the news being hounded by the press.

Hoebag · 02/04/2012 15:42

I dont hate her I think she is just doing what she knows,

writhing around looking like shes keen to keep a street corner warm, you only have to go to the nearest bar/club to see girls the same, only difference is she has a good voice.

I dont think her stuff is really aimed at very young girls though naive

scuzy · 02/04/2012 15:43

how can you "hate" someone you dont know. you dont know her personally. so silly.

msrisotto · 02/04/2012 16:49

Hyper- Not Jay-z's biggest fan either. It's all bitches and ho's in rap and pop music these days.

Fairenuff · 02/04/2012 17:00

What is a 'slag' anyway? Didn't that word used to be used to describe women who had sex when and with whom they want to? Surely people don't still use it in that way these days?
