AIBU to think that they should urine sample pots...

..specifically for women?

The sample pots they give you are stupidly narrow. Fine at home, can pee in a cup and pour it in, but when your asked to do one at the doctors, its bloody impossible to get the pee in without peeing all over the cup and your hands. Cue Blush face when you hand it over.

Am I just doing it wrong? Is there a knack to it?

Er, I'm a UTI/kidney infection veteran, and I rinse the outside of the bottle after doing it at the GPs. Then dry it off with a towel. Really there is no need to be embarassed. If you find it very difficult then the Dr should have kind of tray/card bedpan things you can do it into then pour it.

SparkyMcSparrow · 29/03/2012 12:45

I did rinse and dry it, but still felt Blush
But still not as easy as it is for a man!
We don't have they same aiming abilities!

Jins · 29/03/2012 12:46

Yeah I can do it. Precision peeing is a skill

SparkyMcSparrow · 29/03/2012 12:47

Jins tell me your secrets!

Ask for a cup, it's what I do. They keep a supply of plastic cups specifically for this at my surgery. I think they do want to limit as much cross contamination as possible though, so it's best to catch mid-flow and just cap it, then give it and your hands a wee wash and dry. (oh look, Scottish pun Grin)

Sidge · 29/03/2012 12:49

They're made for the laboratory's benefit, not yours! Smile

They're designed for samples to be sent off.

I do as Wibbly does - pee in pot, rinse pot, dry, wash hands. Job done.

Jins · 29/03/2012 12:51

It's down to positioning. You have to get the pot in place without moving too much and you mustn't be over enthusiastic

canyou · 29/03/2012 12:52

I keep a supply of sample pots from the chemist at home and bring a sample with me as I cannot always fill a sample at DR when I have just been to loo before leaving home, or ask for a pot before you leave for next time

MuckingFuddle · 29/03/2012 12:55

There is a knack to it - try and wee slow and steady and keep the pot as close to the ..........wee hole Blush as you can.

cheesesarnie · 29/03/2012 13:00

wee, wipe, hand over or practise your aim.

BareBums · 29/03/2012 13:01

Haha PMSL laughing at this thread

It is true, there is a knack to it...when I was pregnant I was getting good at it Grin
Then my huge bump got in the way so...

Didn't know you could ask for a cup though! Will do that if I ever need to wee in a test tube thing! Grin

Sootie · 29/03/2012 13:01

I become an expert at peeing into a tube by the end of every pregnancy I've had!

I find that the label on the outside being wet is embarrassing too Blush. What you need to do is do a little wee so you know which angle/direction it is going to flow, then place the tube under there and catch a little.

Hope that helps!

margoandjerry · 29/03/2012 13:01

I know what you mean. Some are ok - like about the diameter of an old fashioned milk bottle top. But some are more like test tubes. Which seems unnecesarily demanding.

BareBums · 29/03/2012 13:01

Oh and no YANBU to want to wee in one better designed for women! Smile

KatAndKit · 29/03/2012 13:02

I have had to pee in so many pots due to the number of appointments I have had this pregnancy. I can do it without drenching my hand, you just hold it nice and close. If you have good pelvic floor control it is even easier - stop the wee while you put the pot in place, wee a bit into the pot, squeeze again while you remove it.

Anyway it isn't the end of the world if you wee on your hand. You can wash your hand after all and urine is not a dirty substance.

Getting some on the outside of the pot is another matter. I always do mine at home and then pop it in a sandwich bag for handing over. I believe the medical people use gloves anyway when they are handling specimens.

Just realised I missed the do out of the title Blush

If you're a sprayer, you could always get one of these for targeted peeing?

OTheHugeManatee · 29/03/2012 13:04

Ooh! Look! You can get one with an extension cable too!

SparkyMcSparrow · 29/03/2012 13:04

Thank you bums :)

I'm not a sprayer but I might get one of those anyway. Thanks Manatee. that will make samples a piece of piss Grin

Sparky - YABVVU! Is this really all you have to worry about Hmm. What a nice protected, sheltered life you must lead if thsi is such an issue to you?

You do know some people in the world would kill for a pot to piss in...whatever the size and shape Hmm

SparkyMcSparrow · 29/03/2012 13:08

Oh fuck off lesley Grin

batteryhen · 29/03/2012 13:10

They do make pee-pots for women - they come with a little disposable funnel attached. My surgery gives them out all the time.

RachelWalsh · 29/03/2012 13:10

I tried the start peeing, establish trajectory then get nice mid flow sample technique the other day, it would have worked really well except it was a much smaller wee I needed than I thought and I had to present the midwife with a pathetically small dribble of wee to test.

It's not really worth getting embarrassed about though. I'm sure they've seen it all before.

lesley33 · 29/03/2012 13:11

Fuck off you are all cunts.Hmm Hmm Hmm Hmm Hmm Hmm Hmm
