Lights on in the fog?

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/03/2012 17:26

AIBU to expect other drivers to use some lighting when it's foggy? If my journey to work on these last few foggy mornings is any thing to go by I suspect I am. Why don't people put lights on? It was really quite bad this morning yet still drivers loomed out the fog with either no lights on or side lights and what the hell is side lights in the fog all about anyway?

Every bit as stupid as the idiots who drive with their fog lights on in a bit of rain or the complete nobbers who have their front fogs on all the time Angry

CogitoErgoSometimes · 12/03/2012 17:39

YANBU... People merrily driving around in the gloom with no lights is a BP-raise for me. I know why it happens... they can see where they're going so they think it's OK. What they don't get is we can't see you!!!. And don't get me started on sidelights. Off or dipped people. Off or dipped. Sidelights are only for parking

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/03/2012 17:42

Sidelights for parking? Confused

OP - just flash at them Grin they may have just forgotten.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/03/2012 17:48

You're mean to to use side lights for parking when you're at night when on a road or in a lay-by when the speed limit of that road is greater than 30mph. The police used to regularly ticket people in the village for night time parking without lights here as the speed limit used to be 40mph.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/03/2012 17:52

Ah yes.. I so rarely do that, but usually remember to stick the side lights on. I thought Cog meant not to use them any other time?

tbh I'm not sure what I know about sidelights!

manticlimactic · 12/03/2012 18:01

YANBU. I see loads of people with no lights on what-so-ever when it's foggy - even when it's getting dark people don't put them on round here. Also the idiots who use the front fog lights when it's not foggy, using them as fancy lights.

Re the side lights. Are you not supposed to use them unless you're parked? And how about if you're leaving your car? Do you have to leave the side lights on?

Meglet · 12/03/2012 18:04

YANBU.

I was fucking LIVID this morning after seeing cars with either no fog lights or even headlights on Shock Angry. Luckily I do drive sensibly so I didn't have any near misses but a few idiots obviously had death wishes.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/03/2012 18:06

Yup, meant to leave them on the whole time the car is parked at night time (if the limit is greater than 40mph). I'm not sure if my lights would stay on or not, I guess there must be a way around putting the lights on as it's a legal requirement.

Its odd isn't it - people are aware enough that its foggy to put on some lights but then don't put them on properly. WTF are they thinking? Sidelights are useless in fog (I used to commute through the Vale of York - I know of what I speak!)

Here in Lancashire I've never seen proper fog and you get the opposite problem of people turning on rear fogs at the first wisp of light mist. Bless.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/03/2012 18:12

If you leave the indicator on with the engine turned off then side lights on that side of the car should stay on (I think!)

stargirl1701 · 12/03/2012 18:12

I'm one of the bad ones :) I love my front fog lights on - my car looks cool! I'm such a child!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/03/2012 18:12

Well stop it!

ginmakesitallok · 12/03/2012 18:14

well stop it stargirl (assuming you are being serious??) You blind everyone coming towards you and will cause an accident.

Agincourt · 12/03/2012 18:19

yanbu
whilst we are at it
I am sick of bloody cyclists in the dark/fog along unlit country lanes with no high viz on and poxy one light.

Have they got a death wish?

and jogegr too, wearing black, in the dark along unlit road
sensible Hmm

GrimmaTheNome · 12/03/2012 18:22

No stargirl, not cool. Pillockish. Sorry.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 12/03/2012 18:23

Hear, hear on the cyclist bit too. I used to regularly encountered the same cyclist out on the road that leads into our village, no lights, no high viz, dressed in black. The road into our village is flat, with sweeping bends, it is also fairly narrow and is national speed limit. It is used as a rat run to avoid a nearby trunk road that often snarls up. Lorries hurtle along at max speed, when two lorries pass there is little room for anything else yet still this bloke used to cycle along with no lights on. I frequently wanted to bash his head against a brick wall.

I know, I know. I'm such a boy racer. My car even has big blue stripes... It's just the most amazing feeling of freedom. I did stop using my mob after the law changed. More self improvement :(

dazzlingdeborahrose · 12/03/2012 19:00

Depends what you mean by foggy. Fog lights shouldn't be turned on unless visibility has dropped to 100 metres. If you mean people should put their headlights on then YANBU but nothing bugs me more than people banging on their front and rear fog lights when there's just a bit of mizzle.

Did once see a policeman pull a cyclist for riding in the dark without lights. Sadly, it made my evening Grin

HoudiniHissy · 12/03/2012 19:10

Oh YANBU!

Eejits this morning... Fog as thick as it's been for years.

Those in ffing grey/silver/fog coloured cars with no ffing lights....

[head explodes emoticon]

SherlockHolmes · 12/03/2012 19:21

Why does anyone think that sidelights are a replacement for headlights? You've only got to look at the cars coming towards you to see that sidelights are completely and utterly pointless.

Always use your headlights in fog.

And if you need your wipers, you need your headlights.

Do not ever drive with sidelights on - that's not what they're for.

Rear fog lights should only be used in extremely, extremely thick fog. And turned off again afterwards; nothing worse than following a car with a glaring fog light.

Front fog lights - completely nonsense. They only exist as a warning to others that you're a twat. Ditto spoilers.

Rant over, as you were.

StuckUpTheFezziwigTree · 12/03/2012 19:24

God I hate fog lights. So dangerous to use them in patchy fog. Or leaving them on after the fog has gone. Grrrr!!!

TheVermiciousKnid · 12/03/2012 19:30

Well said, SherlockHolmes!

If it's dark enough for lights, put your proper lights on, not side lights.

FatherHankTree · 12/03/2012 19:32

Front fog lights are useful if you're driving around country lanes in the dark. I avoided killing a cyclist who had stopped just after a blind bend, as the front fog lights picked out the reflective stripes in his shoes. I always switch off the front ones in traffic though, only use them on v quiet roads.
