To feel like it's JUST not FAIR?

Ok, this has probably been done a million times already but; I work full time (am single parent to 2 dc) and have to pay my own mortgage myself (£800). I do receive working tax/family tax credits and a little maintenance from ex, but still have very little/no money left at the end of the month.

My sister is also a single parent, works only 16hrs a week, and refuses to work any more than this as she knows her whole rent of £1000 a month would no longer be footed by the tax payer.
She recently sold her shared ownership home, managed to keep the extra £13k she made out of it and bought a brand new car, a holiday for her kids and boyfriend and brand new furniture for her new rented house. She owes my mum several thousand pounds but did not pay her back.

How is this fair??? Needless to say, we are not v close!

Just wanted to add, I am in a not-very-well-paid job at the moment. Have studied for the past 8 years for my degree so I can begin teaching career as soon as i think i can manage it?!

How big is her telly?

hubbabubbabubba · 24/02/2012 12:34

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 24/02/2012 12:34

No it's not fair. I can't believe her 1k rent is being paid by housing benefit. The whole lot?

SunflowersSmile · 24/02/2012 12:35

I'm in a not fair mood today as going to lose my £10 per week tax credit in April as as a household we earn over 26,000 a year. Pissed off as the money very useful. Bastards, bastards.
Sorry- off on a tangent op.....over to you again........

hubbabubbabubba · 24/02/2012 12:36

Thanks Hexagonal. Yes, the whole whack. That's the going rate for a 3 bed house round here.

Which bit isn't fair?

What has your mum said about not being repaid?

Feminine · 24/02/2012 12:36

Well, with the new hellish universal tax credit system on the way, I'd say things are going to start looking a little different for your sister.

hermionestranger · 24/02/2012 12:37

It's not fair but she is going to have to up here hours if she wants to keep her ctc though.

We lost all our tax credits last April. £300 a month because we had one under one. That was a shocker!

hubbabubbabubba · 24/02/2012 12:38

Iit's not fair on the tax payer OR my mum!

these type of posts never go down well, sometimes they do reach 10 pages though Wink (on my set up anyway)

Op it's a truth universally acknowledged that sisters are always jammier than a jam doughnut.

op if you can't be bothered, I'd get it removed. :)

wannabestressfree · 24/02/2012 12:46

I don't mean to pour cold water on what you said......... but........
There is a set amount of housing benefit being paid per bedroom house.
I get the set amount for four bedroom.
And its less than that......... by far.

That's why people are leaving certain areas

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 24/02/2012 12:48

No, it's not fair. But that's why there is a welfare reform bill.

You owe your mum thousands too. Generous isn't she?

It is highly unlikely that your sister has 1k rent covered by hb and was allowed to keep the 13k.

What sort of telly does she have?
