people like Gary Glitter and yet convicted child rapist Roman Polanski is applauded for his latest film offering?

I guess actors like Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster really couldn't afford to stand up for principles.

The man hasn't even done his time ffs.

I dunno. I despise them both.

I think lots of people think they are being edgy or something, and that Polanski's victim "was in to it". Because it's in their interest to think so, so they don't have to take a moral stance and miss the film.

Whereas Glitter's music isn't much loss to most people of today.

MissSayuri · 18/02/2012 11:17

YANBU, the whole thing stinks. I'm astounded by the list of people who back him. Good article here.
Roman Polanski child rapist

Meglet · 18/02/2012 11:20

I condem both of them. Fuck knows why Winslet, Foster and Depp (I think) stick by him Angry.

Tilda Swinton has voiced her support for RP, too. Baffling.

I personally condemn them both.

But I think some cannot separate Polanski from the hideous events of his earlier life. He should be in prison but his life has unbelievable tragedy. Maybe friendship, the fact that he is actually talented and his hideous life history muddies peoples feelings.

Relatives continue relationships with abusive family members. It is complicated. I have family members who continued to be close with my abuser. There is a weird disconnect I think - as if they can't quite believe it.

I think it relates in part to the stranger danger thing - we want pedophiles to be odd, scary, weird loners. It is easier. Otherwise, if they really are charming, sensible, funny etc how can we trust anyone.

It is easy to ve sneery about celebs doing it. But lots of people do it. I think it is fear and genuine disbelief that someone we like or love can be such people.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 18/02/2012 11:55

I think when the Polanski stuff first came out there was a letter in the paper saying something like 'Gary Glitter must be wondering where all the celebrity apologists for paedophilia were hiding when his case came to trial'.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 18/02/2012 12:00

I condemn them both too. I think Roman Polanski has got away with it purely because of Sharon Tate's death and the loss of his son. I wonder if a non-celeb would have got away with the same in those circumstances?

I'd like to know what a FoF is too.

I condemn them both too, and have no time for those who suck up to him either.

The films are almost as fantastic as the Twilight trilogy...

IvanaHumpalot · 18/02/2012 14:42

www.vachss.com/mission/roman_polanski.html

This article is helpful to understand the sequence of events.

I see no difference between him and any other rapist/abuser, apart from the quality of defense he can afford. He raped a 13 yr old, I don't care if she was a "Lolita" or not. There is a cut off age for minors for a reason.

Interestingly, where are the books people like Pete Townsend, Chris Langham were "researching"...

yellowraincoat · 18/02/2012 15:00

I find it really cringy that people continue to appear in Polanski films. So vile. I would never go and see one.

Heyyyho · 18/02/2012 15:11

I agree with you.

Many of RP esp early Films have a touch of genius. Film is my passion it I won't see a Polanski or woody Allen film again, it is just not right after what they did, what they stand for. Just because they are artists doesn't cancel out detestable crimes.

RP has enormous support from the biggest names in Hollywood. The list of them is depressing. Remember jack Nicholson and Angelica Houston were in the house when it was happening, when the young girl got set up. :(

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 18/02/2012 15:24

I find the most disturbing aspect to be the way his supporters have used the fact that the girl involved does not wish to go to trial as suggesting that it should all be left and forgotten. It's immaterial whether she does or does not, IMO, and the fact that she doesn't is itself pretty worrying.

WinkyWinkola · 18/02/2012 15:51

I'm not surprised she wants to forget about. I bet she's had some heavy people leaning on her over the years.

Wonder how many little girls he has raped? And the rest.

OP posts:
TheBigJessie · 18/02/2012 16:52

Actually, her age at the time has been used as a red herring by his supporters. In general, a fudge of Look-It's-Just-A-Petty-Misjudgment-Over-A-Mere-Number.

Getting a female drunk, in order to persuade her to have sex with you, and then having sex with her EVEN AFTER SHE SAID NO REPEATEDLY, is rape.

It would have been rape, whether at 13, 21, or 31

TheBigJessie · 18/02/2012 16:57

Also, I think Lunabelly's post about Twilight needs repeating to him.

Hit him in the artistic creativity! It may be the worst consequence for him yet.
