To be a bit hmmm at friend using DD's name for her dog?

We each have 3 DC's, two of whom are in the same classes at school. She approached me last week and said they had just bought a puppy and called it the same name as my 2 year old DD, it's not a particularly common name so am just wondering if aibu to be a bit ? We aren't good friends but see each other everyday and she will no doubt be bringing the dog with her to school everyday.

My friend did this with her cat. She let her daughter choose the name, so the daughter chose a friend's name. We name our chickens after friends. It had never occurred to me that people would see it as anything other than affectionate.

I want to know the name too.

It seems a bit odd to come and make a point of telling you, but perhaps her child likes yours so much it was them that wanted to use the name.

My nephew went through a stage of naming everything Mark, after his friend from school. Which is why my mother has four fish in her tank, all named Mark.

My friend did the same. Strangely enough, I had my dd and she had a puppy about 3 months later and told me that she really wanted to call her puppy Tilly but didn't think she could because of my DD. She then had a second puppy about a year after that and proceeded to call her Tilly. We were still friends and no, my dd hadn't changed her name

Now I need to know the name. Rover Hag? Bouncer Hag? Or is the dog called Iona, Gretchen, Isabella? Tell us, tell us?

Although I don't think you've got the monopoly on the name, I have to say it isn't something I'd have done personally and it is a bit odd of your friend.

Her name is Cherry

She said she always liked the so it is her choice, not the children's. She can be a bit catty at times which is what makes me a bit more about it I guess...

I upset a friend when we got a rescue dog called Jack. Her ds is Jack, and she wanted me to change the dogs name. I didn't and she did get over it but she wasn't happy. Jack and Jack thought it was great!

I wouldn't intentionally name a dog after anyone I know.

One of the men DP works with has a dog with my name. A few years ago he worked for my dad and named his dog after the pub (which was called our surname). Fast forward a few years he works with DP, and we are friends - cue me being very confused the first time I went to their house and he kept calling the dog my name!

Shes a lovely dog though so its ok

However, if she chose it herself the YWNBU to bitchslap her upside her face.

My DD had fish named after friends, one of the friends who had a fish named after her had a hamster named after my DD...

It was still less confusing than DS's fish, lol Goldy, Goldy Goldy, Goldy surname and Blancy (t'was a white one)

I'd assume her DC had a hand in it as well.

Our first dog we had was called Tilly. I've known 2 people called Tilly since and I find that weird. I also know a horse called Tilly and I still think it is a dogs name.

How do you pronounce Cherry? In the traditional way - Chare-ee, or Cherie? There is a Cherry at DD's school and the parents pronounce it like the fruit.

My guinea pig (when I was 5) was called Susan, after my best friend. Our dogs when I was a child were called Kate and then Rosie. Don't think anyone was offended.

My DS had two goldfish and they were named after his best friends at school.

We even have some friends who called their cats their favourite boys and girls names. And when the cats were still alive called their children those same names.

Everyone's laughing but I would be SO annoyed! A friend said "Oh I like X name for our new puppy!" and looked at me like "I know it's your DDs name I dare you to say anything."

And I said "Don't you bloody dare!£

I used to name our local semi-wild ducks after people I admired - I'd hate to think anyone was insulted by sharing a handle with the little cuties! On the other hand if the situation involves an animal who is a full-time part of one family and a child who is part of a family the first one interacts with, it could get confusing. OH's cousin has a dog, pretty much by coincidence, who has the same name as OH's brother's little boy (also the name of a musician they both like). Meanwhile, my cousin's son has the name their cat had for a little while until the cat turned out to be female - at least that problem is rarer with human children. Maybe it just comes down to whether you (and your child) like the species in question!
