We each have 3 DC's, two of whom are in the same classes at school. She approached me last week and said they had just bought a puppy and called it the same name as my 2 year old DD, it's not a particularly common name so am just wondering if aibu to be a bit Hmm ? We aren't good friends but see each other everyday and she will no doubt be bringing the dog with her to school everyday.

I wanted to call DS2 Felix, but ex-DH put his foot down as we had a cat by the same name. Oddly he's come back from sch today (DS2 not cat) complaining that another pupil will insist on calling him Felix.

My uncle had a gun-dog which was brown from the waist down so my cousins nick-named him Trousers. He then wouldn't answer to anything else, so my uncle had to stomp thru the woods shouting 'Trousers! Trousers! Fetch Trousers! Drop Trousers'.

FezziwigLaVache · 07/02/2012 23:52

Definitely take it as a compliment, I bet the DCs chose the name because they really liked it!

My sister's two sons are called, let us say, Thomas and Henry. Their friends called their cats Thomasina and Henrietta. The boys were a bit Shock Hmm about that!

Jux · 07/02/2012 23:53

I had a cat named Poo. I am still looking for a suitably named friend.

Spermysextowel · 07/02/2012 23:57

Cherry does seem an odd name for a dog, unless it's a red setter or something else that colour (not very up on dogs), but that's maybe unfair of me since not every Cherry child has red hair.

FarloRigel · 07/02/2012 23:58

It's not great, is it? When we got our dog he had been given the same name as one of my colleagues' newborn DS. I wasn't even friends with him really, but changed the dog's name. He was only a pup and didn't react to it yet, so no hardship for him, but it didn't seem right. I'd be a bit peeved too tbh Sad.

flibbertywidget · 07/02/2012 23:58

my workcolleague called her DS after her cat. Shock They had chosen the name for their first grown up shared animal (precursor to children), as it was their fave together name and then when DS1 turned up, they decided they didn't like/couldn't think of another name and named their son after the cat [Grin]

Ds 2 now has a name that sounds like a dog (but they have no dog, although they might be planning to get one and name it after DS2 Confused)

YABU - cos everyone has a right to call their dog/pet whatevername they wish, YANBU because it does seem to be a bit pointed. My name when shortened is often a name used for a dog.. fortunately I haven't managed to get confused,

Longdistance · 08/02/2012 00:03

I'd be annoyed 2. It's not like there aren't any other names in the world your friend could call the dog. But, I don't like dogs anyway. Smell yuck, lick their arses then lick your face [BAUK]!!!

Spermysextowel · 08/02/2012 00:05

There was a boy called Fenton at my sons' nursery. Don't know how old the famous dog is, so not sure who got there first.

Longdistance · 08/02/2012 00:16

I also know someone with a cat called Brian, and she named her son Felix Confused

springydaffs · 08/02/2012 00:18

I wouldn't like it. YANBU - she is.

TakeYourScaffoldingWithYou · 08/02/2012 00:22

YANBU but lets hope your friend aint great at dog training.

I'm not sure I'd want to be stomping round the local rec twice a day with the mutt shouting variations on "Cherry, I 've lost my Cherry"

Driftwood999 · 08/02/2012 00:29

"I've lost my Cherry" Grin Grin parents, please think before naming dc

BonzoDooDah · 08/02/2012 00:37

We did the opposite and named out DD the same name as our friend's dog! We liked the name waaay before they got the dog and were a bit gutted they used that name but it all worked out well. When they visit The dog gets called TinyBonzo I and DD called TinyBonzo II Grin

Driftwood999 · 08/02/2012 00:38

OP, sorry, didn't answer your post properly, fwisw yabu. Although I get your point, Cherry is not a particularly common name.

Spermysextowel · 08/02/2012 00:39

You couldn't call a child Brian these days. The only plus point is that it's often misspelt as Brain, so at least they'd feel a sense of achievement sometimes, albeit accidental.

iwouldgoouttonight · 10/02/2012 14:08

DS has the same name as a hamster I used to have - I just really like the name! One of my friends enjoys winding me up that I named my son after a hamster.

One of DS's friends have just given their puppy the same name as my DD. They didn't know DD's name at the time as we didn't know them very well. But when they found out they were really apologetic about it, but I don't mind at all. I just makes me realise we have chosen a lovely name that other people also like! Grin

TheCuntwormUnderfoot · 10/02/2012 14:12

I once had the most amazing rat that I would happily name my child after.

Hairynigel · 10/02/2012 14:13

We named our cat after DP's dad, he hated it at first but think he finds it a bit funnier now, it might grow on you as well.

lottielou39 · 10/02/2012 15:37

we got a dog a few years ago and my daughters wanted to name her after a school friend. I don't know or care if it caused offence. Names are not for sale. It's a free world.

dandelionss · 10/02/2012 15:49

Bad name for a dog or a girl.
OP, you do know what 'cherry' is slang for ?

Plonker · 10/02/2012 16:00

Op's dd is 2 years old dandelionss, and she didn't ask your opinion on her name. That's really rather rude.

I wouldn't like it either op. SIL named their new puppy a name that is very very similar to my dd3's name ...it does annoy me.

Y (and I) ABU though. We don't own the names and we just have to get over it.

ditavonteesed · 10/02/2012 16:06

omg you named your baby after my dog. Grin

dandelionss · 10/02/2012 16:08

'Op's dd is 2 years old dandelionss'
exactly .. you don't name a baby , without naming a child, a teenager and a woman!

ditavonteesed · 10/02/2012 16:10

maybe you are talking about me, cherry the dog is nearly 2.
