It goes straight into fruit bowl. Nobody has died yet (or become ill as far as I'm aware)

AIBU?

Nope, I never wash it either.

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2012 09:33

Me too. We are fine so far.......

PurpleKittyKnitting · 22/01/2012 09:36

I never used to but do wash grapes as one time there was a tiny slug on one of them in the bag! Shock

Iheartpasties · 22/01/2012 09:37

I'm curious, does running a piece of fruit or veg under the tap for a few seconds constitute 'washing'? does this reall dislodge chemicals ect or should they be washed with something else?

RoxyRobin · 22/01/2012 09:39

God, I'd never do that - and I'm not a germ-neurotic. I just have to look at all the people pawing the produce in my local greengrocers ...

If you wouldn't be happy licking their hands, then wash the fruit is what I say to myself.

GingerSnapsBack · 22/01/2012 09:39

Never washed fruit either. Don't see much point to it really

Wellthen · 22/01/2012 09:46

Nope me neither, or salad. I do wash veg that actually has mud on it though! My Dad goes mad, geuninely seems to think I'll get an awful disease.

Janedont · 22/01/2012 09:51

I always wash it because even a quick rinse means my children are eating less chemical pesticides. I can't see why you wouldn't to be honest. I am in no way a clean freak but washing fruit seems like a very simple basic hygiene measure.

Anniegetyourgun · 22/01/2012 09:52

But what's in the water you wash it with?

sharenicely · 22/01/2012 09:55

Yes I do for the pesticides and other peoples hands touching it. Takes two seconds so why not.

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 22/01/2012 10:01

There is no point washing fruit with water to wash chemicals off as it doesn't work at all. The only thing washing with water does is remove mud, cobwebs and any, , hangers on.

ApplesinmyPocket · 22/01/2012 11:14

I've never washed fruit and we are all as tough as fiddles. Or fit as old boots, one or the other. As others have said it doesn't remove chemicals and I'm sure our systems are quite able to deal with 'other people's pawings'.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 22/01/2012 11:16

I don't any more, but I used to when we lived in Thailand. A lot of our fruit and veg was imported from China. Apparently/allegedly they use night soil to fertilise their produce.
I used to buy fruit and veg wash. I suspect it was the same a washing up liquid since it foamed.

bubbleandsqueaks · 22/01/2012 11:25

I just don't see what it achieves?

Theonewiththehair · 22/01/2012 11:30

I don't either and it's not done us any harm.

I do. with washing up liquid. mainly because I don't like the taste, especially grapes.

CailinDana · 22/01/2012 11:41

I wash fruit under the tap and then wipe them with a clean teatowel. That at least will get any grease and dirt from other people's hands off them. A friend of mine has a special scrubbing brush that she uses to scrub apples, which is more effective than just washing and wiping but I can't be arsed.

Catsmamma · 22/01/2012 11:43

never....life is too short.

and i pick things off the floor....three second rule and all that.

unreasonableannie · 22/01/2012 11:44

i put mine in the dishwasher on the "extreme" setting

just in case like

Acekicker · 22/01/2012 11:49

Nope, never wash it... irritatingly DS is prone to eczema and has a serious allergy and there's always some judgey smart-arse who wants to point out that these things happen because 'we're too neurotic about germs these days and keeping everything clean'. As fucking if in our case! These people have clearly never seen my house nor the state of DS Grin!

SucksToBeMe · 22/01/2012 11:54

I've NEVER washed fruit!

Lueji · 22/01/2012 11:59

I hope at least you wash your hands after going to the toilet. Some people don't and some of those handle the fruit you eat.

Sure, most times you'll be fine.
Until you get D&V and wonder where that came from...

springydaffs · 22/01/2012 12:03

I always wash fruit and I'm nowhere near a 'cleany' type. Just washing off all the pesticides etc

SucksToBeMe · 22/01/2012 12:16

I worked with horses for years and would eat at work without washing my hands, often while mucking out! I must have a strong constitution!
