In thinking a 5 yo is not "a toddler"

i have a friend who describes her DD - aged 5 and in equivalent of YR - as "a toddler".

AIBU in thinking toddlers are tiny people who are toddling about, learning how to walk and run and scoot, not 5 year olds who can read and write their own names, get themselves dressed, ice skate and ski?

Grin I'd say not. I doubt their school teachers would either.

McHappyPants2012 · 18/01/2012 22:57

is it any diffrent that calling them a baby....my ds is 5 (nearly 6) and i still call him my baby boy

Plonker · 18/01/2012 22:57

YANBU

Toddlers, IMO, are new walkers up to about 2yo

Sanesometimes1 · 18/01/2012 22:58

I would describle as toddler as 2 ish definitely not a 5 year old.

Feminine · 18/01/2012 22:59

I don't know?

Here (US ) that age is called a pre-schooler.

So,I feel that although not technically a toddler ...she is a still in a different stage to 6/7 year olds.

Well, I now don't know if my post made any sense? :)

McHappyPants2012 · 18/01/2012 22:59

anyhow i would say preschool age are toddlers.

does that mean my 2year 7 month old dd is no longer a toddler :(

Feminine · 18/01/2012 23:00

McHappy I'd say she was.

For me it runs till about 3/4.

CuriousMama · 18/01/2012 23:01

I call my dss babies and one of those is bigger than me Grin But toddler is different imo. It's a baby just toddling, unsure on it's feet.

D0oinMeCleanin · 18/01/2012 23:01

It depends on the child. dd1 was a mini teenager when she was 5. Dd2 is very much still toddler like. I have a meeting with everyone who is involved with her care and the SENCO at the end of the month to discuss whether there is actually something going on or whether I am just a crap parent.

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 18/01/2012 23:03

Yanbu - that's not even a preschooler to me. It's school age .
I wouldn't even refer to my 3yr old as a toddler .

CuriousMama · 18/01/2012 23:03

Definition here.

Greythorne · 18/01/2012 23:05

The context is that her child has been asked by an adult (not her or the chikd's father) to do something (think sit up straight at the table, it's not that but you get the picture) and she thinks this is too big an ask of 'a toddler'.

Shock Although tbh if the parents are present aren't they the ones who should decide on this sort of thing? Still, not a toddler though.

Pandemoniaa · 18/01/2012 23:11

Generally speaking, I wouldn't describe a school age child as a toddler. I'd not like to put a specific limit on toddlerhood but by 5, no, a child isn't a toddler.

Greythorne · 18/01/2012 23:13

Curious
It wasn't that exactly. Just similar.

CuriousMama · 18/01/2012 23:14

I know that's why I said 'this sort of thing'.

ReneeVivien · 18/01/2012 23:14

I thought 0-1 is baby, 1-3 toddler, 3-4 pre-schooler. Though actually I wouldn't really describe my 2yo as a toddler any more - she is scootering, talking, dancing, eating with cutlery... Sitting up at the table doesn't seem a big ask for a 5yo.

Greythorne · 18/01/2012 23:16

troisgarcons · 18/01/2012 23:20

I thought 0-1 is baby, 1-3 toddler

What if the child doesnt walk till its 15 months?

lobs spanner in

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 18/01/2012 23:21

My 5 yr old is 'toddler sized' and gets really cross when people refer to him as a toddler!
My 7 1/2 year old on the other hand loves to be refered to as my 'baby' although he knows he is not a baby!

D0oinMeCleanin · 18/01/2012 23:23

dd2 would not be capable of sitting up at a table. Physically she is able to do it, but it is beyond the limits of her attention span.

tigerlillyd02 · 18/01/2012 23:25

I think of toddlers as 2/3 year olds. 4+5 is past the toddler stage. I think pre 2 is still a baby really, although they now refer to one year olds as toddlers.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/01/2012 23:26

Arrrrgggh. That means my 13 month old is a toddler not a baby
