we always had our Santa gifts in a pillowcase so I was going to carry on that laziness tradition but she's been asking for a stocking...I keep telling her we have pillowcases in our house.

AIBU?!

YANBU - I'd never had a stocking as a child and don't use them for dc - they're not compulsory!

chibi · 21/12/2011 17:19

well, do what you like, really

what is normal = how we do it

much fun to be had later comparing childhood stories as adults and finding not everyone had a bob monkhouse impersonation contest as a feature of their xmas dinner tradition (for example)

conversely, stockings and fillers may be had quite cheaply down the market/at el poundo shoppo

really, don't stress

pinkhebe · 21/12/2011 17:21

we use pillowcases, I still have the wombles one I used as a child Xmas Grin

stubborncow · 21/12/2011 17:22

yes, not stressing really. Just wondering if I was being mean! I think I am being a little mean, tbh, but she shall learn MY traditions and love it, goddamit!!

and we have a HUGE selection of pillowcases to choose from...

What does she want a stocking for? You can fit loads more in a pillow case!

I was telling DD1 (4) that I used to have the leg of a pair of my mum's tights as my stocking, when I was tiny (my sister had the other leg). DD was horrified until I told her that it stretched so you could get more in! Xmas Grin

Gigondas · 21/12/2011 17:24

Agree with robin - pillow cases more practical. But will stick to stocking as hard wired into me.. Dh and dd anti the satsuma and nut at bottom as want chocolate coins Xmas Wink

LoveInASnowyClimate · 21/12/2011 17:25

You will need far few presents to fill a stocking! But up to you, obviously.

Clayhead · 21/12/2011 17:26

I still have a Wombles pillow case too - no idea why, never even liked them!

LineRunnerCrouchingReindeer · 21/12/2011 17:26

We used to put actual socks on the bottom of our bed.

stubborncow · 21/12/2011 17:27

Robin - yes, I told her we'd fit more in a pillowcase and one of her presents is a large-ish train so it will fit better in there...

Bunbaker · 21/12/2011 17:28

I agree with LoveIn - you can get away with fewer presents in a stocking. When we were little we used to hang a pair of tights at the end of our bed.

MildlyNarkyPuffin · 21/12/2011 17:31

All the songs, pictures, christmas cards etc have a stocking, so she might just be confused. Can you pick a particular one and call it her stocking?

deaconblue · 21/12/2011 17:34

Choose a pillowcase. Buy an off cut of Christmassy material and some bondaweb and aplique her name onto pillowcase. Becomes her own personal special stocking

MrsCarriePooter · 21/12/2011 17:36

RobinSparkles - us too! Are you my sister? Aren't you in Jordan? Xmas Wink

MissBetsyTrotwood · 21/12/2011 17:40

Sorry, from the title I thought Father Christmas was not going to visit her at all! YANBU in the slightest. I was the only one at school with an actual real stocking.

Pillowcases are bigger too Xmas Grin .

MudAndGlitter · 21/12/2011 17:42

I had a pillowcase. DCs have massive carrier bag Santa sack type things because they have bulky presents.

VickityBoo · 21/12/2011 17:42

Oh we had pillowcases and it was really brilliant! I loved it. My friends were jealous too because to them it seemed we had more pressies! (we didn't)

Our dd has a stocking. Up to you though! Smile

LittleJennyRobyn · 21/12/2011 17:43

i prefer a stocking but i suppose thats what we always had as kids so have stockings for DC's...any presents that cant fit get left on the floor outside thier bedroom door (hang stockings on outside of door handle so santa doesn't wake them up!!!)

if you have always had pillowcase then go with that...can you maybe find a red one, most places stock plain coloured pillowcases, only to be used as her "stocking"

bagpuss · 21/12/2011 17:47

Robinsparkles, I had that exact conversation with my dcs the other day too. They were completely horrified that I didn't have a red and white bespoke stocking just for me Xmas Hmm. A leg of old tights is quite sensible really - the amount of times I curse what we have bought because it won't fit!

RoryCeilingCat · 21/12/2011 17:53

another vote for a pillowcase - and I still have mine with Paddington sitting on his suitcase Xmas Smile

whatdoiknowanyway · 21/12/2011 17:56

We had half a pair of tights too.
DC have velvety stocking I got on sale in WH Smiths terms ago.

Guitargirl · 21/12/2011 17:58

I posted on another thread about something similar here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/Christmas/1367059-I-have-just-realised-I-have-no-stockings-for-the-DCs

olibeansmummy · 21/12/2011 18:20

If she's asking for one, I'd get her one tbh Smile

pinkhebe · 21/12/2011 18:41

all our presents went into the pillowcase (and overflowed!) we didn't have a 'stocking' in our bedroom. This year because all the presents are quite small, I've had to wrap the presents in large boxes to get that overflowing look

BertieBotts · 21/12/2011 18:45

But I thought the whole point was to have a stocking and only have small presents in there! Surely if they are too big, they are tree presents!

Tights?! Xmas Shock I think I'd have been sick...
