AIBU to keep this mistake?

I am wrapping up presents at the moment, most of which we bought earlier today. Earlier we were in Halfords and bought a dvd player for the car for ds2. We picked it off from a picture on the wall and paid for it while the customer assistant retrieved item from stockroom and put it in bag for us. Did not really pay attention as had ds2 (11 months) with us and was faffing about with him. The model we picked was £99. Now am at home, take out of bag and see that the assistant has given us the wrong model, the much nicer, upgraded twin model that is worth £199. Would I be wrong to think that the gods have smiled down upon us and cast a bit of luck upon me. Or do I take it back because I was wittering on to the customer assistant how I really wanted the nicer, upgraded twin model but could justify spending any more on dc1, and having had to listen to me, he probably had this (wrong) model in his mind when he went to get it.

Keep it. It's their mistake and they should have noticed. Thank the Xmas god's and wrap it up nicely Grin

rootietootie · 18/12/2011 00:13

That should read could not justify spending any more on dc1 (have already spend more than I should have really on him :o)

I don't think I could keep it, in all honesty - I'd certainly be back at the shop ranting if the mistake had been the other way round.

MrsChristmasDB · 18/12/2011 00:15

Happy Christmas rootie ! Xmas Grin

KatieMistletoe · 18/12/2011 00:15

Keep your receipt and contact then after Xmas when it will no doubt be in the sale.

I won't ask why an 11mo needs a DVD player...

Oh, see it's not for ds2 after all.

rootietootie · 18/12/2011 00:17

Thanks MudandGlitter, I needed someone to tell me that. It was their mistake, I was not planting subliminal messages in his mind :)

Are you sure they didn't charge you for the more expensive model?

But no, I couldn't keep it, it would be dishonest. Also it can't be good for the shopping assistant who made a mistake- will they ask him to pay back for the radio? Even if not, it may endanger his job.

belledechocchipcookie · 18/12/2011 00:19

I'd take it back. £100 is a lot of money and I'd be afraid of karma biting me in the bum.

Bohica · 18/12/2011 00:19

There will be a stock take and peoples names will be bought into question the missing stock.

That said, they should be able to tally one extra £99 item against one missing £199 item and see the problem without blame so I say keep it Xmas Grin

toddlerama · 18/12/2011 00:20

Take it back. They may allow you to keep it anyway. But you haven't paid for it and therefore it isn't yours.

RobynLou · 18/12/2011 00:22

in all honesty I'd keep it.

rootietootie · 18/12/2011 00:24

Katie, we do a lot of travelling to pil (one of whom is disabled and relies upon us for transport) so sometime Ds1 is in the car for long periods of time (they all live in different towns). A dvd player would come in handy on these journeys. But felt bad getting one for ds1 and not one for ds2 but he's 11 and getting so much else, and probably would not care that he doesn't have a dvd player in the car.

Its now wrapped under my tree, but do wonder if I did take it back would they reimburse me for petrol/time? Probably not, so best not to waste it. more justification that I should keep it

I'd keep it.

But it would haunt me forever.

Dalrymps · 18/12/2011 00:24

I'd keep itGrin

Spermysextowel · 18/12/2011 00:25

If you didn't have doubts about it you wouldn't've asked the question. Do what sits easier on your conscience.

winnybella · 18/12/2011 00:26

How did that happen, though? Don't they scan the box?

winnybella · 18/12/2011 00:28

So if the cashier gave you 20 pounds in change instead of 10, would you say nothing and keep it, then ? Confused Because it's the same thing.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 18/12/2011 00:28

I'd keep it, but you have to do something really good for Karma not to come and get you! Could you donate a little bit to charity or visit a lonely neighbour or something?

Wabbit · 18/12/2011 00:30

That wouldn't haunt me ... nor did the Kindle that arrived to replace the lost kindle i'd recieved 30 days after I ordered it last year...

BarryManilowsWardrobe · 18/12/2011 00:31

I would keep it tbh. I tried to order an iPad charger over the net. It wouldn't let me pay because I needed to register with goolgle checkout. I never paid. They still sent it. I've kept it. Mind you, that's only £6.99. But still, their mistake. Depends how you feel about karma though, I guess...

samwellsbutt · 18/12/2011 00:36

i worked in retail in several stores and would not have got pulled up for a mistake like that. they would have to go through the tills to see who made the sale then the cameras to see who gave the wrong item. unless the wrong item was scanned and the wrong money taken but i cant see how that discrepancy would not have been pulled up on the till at the time.
if the till was down then yes they will be pissed but its hard to blame any one person for that, stock takes are always wrong. so frankly i would enjoy it as one of those things. it was probably a massively over priced product anyway.

rootietootie · 18/12/2011 00:37

winnybella, what happened was I was looking at all the different models on the wall and the CA came along and spoke to me. I told him which one I wanted, so we went to the computer till where he selected one of the screen. I paid for it, and then waited while he went to the stockroom to get it. But I kind of wandered off to the right slightly there was a cool childrens toy Ferarri and I wanted to see if it suited ds2 and when the CA found me he handed me my item in a bag.

If I had noticed in the shop I would have probably said something, but now I am at home, and having to return to that shop will cost me petrol (its in another town), and half a day, which to be honest, I don't really have at the moment.
