I am wrapping up presents at the moment, most of which we bought earlier today. Earlier we were in Halfords and bought a dvd player for the car for ds2. We picked it off from a picture on the wall and paid for it while the customer assistant retrieved item from stockroom and put it in bag for us. Did not really pay attention as had ds2 (11 months) with us and was faffing about with him. The model we picked was £99. Now am at home, take out of bag and see that the assistant has given us the wrong model, the much nicer, upgraded twin model that is worth £199. Would I be wrong to think that the gods have smiled down upon us and cast a bit of luck upon me. Or do I take it back because I was wittering on to the customer assistant how I really wanted the nicer, upgraded twin model but could justify spending any more on dc1, and having had to listen to me, he probably had this (wrong) model in his mind when he went to get it.

Not sure what you mean Michaela. The op paid for a cheaper model and received a much more expensive one. Therefore she has received something she hasn't paid for. What's hard to understand?

Halfords have an epos system, which means that unless the tills were down, the item was scanned and came up at that price.

Which means that either there was an error when they released the prices to the till, or more likely they are planning to put the item on sale at the lower price, had released changes to the till but not changed shelf edge lables.

I think you can keep it, phone them if it makes you feel better and they will probably say the same.

LivingDead · 20/12/2011 00:45

Glad you decided to keep it.

This has happened to me a few times, loads of suncream in boots for £5 Hmm still not sure how that one occurred, wallpaper and paint in b&q for £14, took £50 out of a cash machine, dd was fiddling with the keypad, never came out of my account (really wish I knew what buttons she pressed). Meh, can't feel sad for companies making huge profits, didn't go back.

HoHoOpotomus · 20/12/2011 01:06

It will probably be in sale for £99 in a few days time anyway .......

Having said that I usually to correct mistakes in shops. But if I'd got all the way home it might be another story. It's their mistake and your inconvenience to take the time to take it back and rectify the error for them. Yep, on balance I'd keep it.

ilovesooty · 20/12/2011 01:26

I wouldn't keep it. After all, you'd surely complain if you'd paid for the more expensive model and got the cheaper one. I'm saddened (but not surprised) that so many people would keep it without a second thought.

confuddledDOTcom · 20/12/2011 02:11

It's not stealing so I don't think I would feel I had anything to feel bad about.

A couple of my own stories. I once had £10 plus charges go from my account supposedly at a rival bank's ATM. I spoke to my uncle who is a manager for that chain and he said it happens all the time. Mum and I went in to speak to the branch manager and he tried to say I must have (despite walking past my own branch to do it) done it myself or someone at work had done it as mistakes don't happen. Mum told him that we knew it wasn't true as we knew someone who worked for them. When he asked who (rather smugly, obviously expecting a cleaner or something) he got rather flustered when she told him... Anyway, a few weeks later I go to withdraw money and the machine is still chuntering away from the last person so I wait until it's finished and it pops out £10! I said "Oh well, banks don't make mistakes so that never happened" my uncle thought it was hilarious BTW.

Recently I went to renew my subscription to a local attraction. I had lost one of my ID cards (I have a disabled pass so get a spare for a helper) so I explained the situation and he printed off the one I had lost (with the new dates on) I said "no I need both" and he printed off the other one. I handed over the debit card and he said "no, it's OK, nothing to pay".

TwelveGaysOfChristmas · 20/12/2011 08:33

Of course you'd complain if you paid £199 for a £99 model. That's the shop screwing you out of an extra hundred!

But in this situation she's benefited from their oversight that, quite frankly, shouldn't bloody happen. Why can't people just think "Oooh, bit of good luck for me!" and leave it at that?

melika · 20/12/2011 08:39

Hope it works now! If you had to take it back they will question the receipt.

I would keep it.

Shakey1500 · 20/12/2011 09:27

The least I would do is contact Halfords head office and explain what has happened.

You don't know that the assistant in question won't lose their job over it. Management don't know that you are unrelated/unnaquainted and might think that he was pulling a fast one for you. Neither do you know that the till may have pulled up the wrong price or whatever.

Chances are they will say Merry Christmas and let you keep it. Then you have a clear mind can't spell conscionse that you did the right thing.
