leelo · 11/12/2011 20:31

i agree with you. my daughter started collecting them this year. i saw they were being discontinued and bought lots to put away for christmas and now theres these new style ones with weird pointy eyes and skinny legs and bodies. i'm not buying her them. on xmas morning she will receive the missing ones from her collection fat and cheerful like they are supposed to be. the new ones give me the heebies.

winterfox · 11/12/2011 20:32

i thought they were weird and slutty when they came out in the 80s

Ambrosius · 11/12/2011 20:37

They are a bit like those Bratz dolls now... Vile things. Come to think of it I think there might actually be Bratz Ponyz too. shudder

Nowadays they are like the song. 'My little pony, skinny and bony.'

I don't know if they live in a stable and drink Carling Black Label though.

Backtobedlam · 11/12/2011 20:46

My dd loves my little pony, everytime we see them in the shops she points them out. The new ones are horrible! Hoping some of the classics are still around on eBay as there's no way I'm buying the new version.

peggotty · 11/12/2011 20:46

Sluttier?? Shock. Well, I had one called Lickety Split back then, which my (much older) siblings used to snigger at. Obv I realised why at a later date!

CupOfGoodCheer · 11/12/2011 20:49

No more fat little purple Blossom? Or Applejack? Sad

They brought out those ones with the wings just after the originals, they were crap.

Rhubarbgarden · 11/12/2011 20:49

No! Please tell me it's not true. I loved my My Little Ponies. Why must they mess with things like this? Why? Why? Why?

NoOnesGoingToEatYourMincePies · 11/12/2011 20:52

I've still got my 1980's ponies, so I'll have to try and find a new one and compare them.

picnicbasketcase · 11/12/2011 20:52

I had the unicorn called Majesty and her little pet dragon Spike. They came with the Dream Castle. Best Xmas gift EVER. Grin

peggotty · 11/12/2011 20:54

Oh the dream castle EnvyEnvy. I only had the grooming parlour.

picnicbasketcase · 11/12/2011 20:59

Ohh, I would have LOVED the grooming parlour - my friend had one, I was so jealous. My favourite pony was Cotton Candy.

That's it, I'm buying some off eBay.

PastGrace · 11/12/2011 21:08

The new ones are horrific. I was telling my friend about the talking one that I had:
"I love you! I'm pretty. I love you! Comb my hair"

The "Comb my hair" bit was basically an order.

My friend's mum wouldn't let her have any toys that "restricted imagination" (ie. nothing that talked - she had to pretend it spoke), so she was exceedingly jealous!

MrsMumf · 11/12/2011 21:09

My little whorse?

Rhubarbgarden · 11/12/2011 21:14

Dream Castle? Grooming Parlour? Pah. I had to make do with a home-made gipsy caravan that was on Blue Peter, constructed lovingly from loo-roll middles and a cereal box. Envy.

Ambrosius · 13/12/2011 10:20

that's it. Im naming changing to LicketySplit ... Grin

My DD absolutely adores my little pony, it started with me buying her the My Little Pony movie I watched as a kid (the with the Smooze!) and the obsession grew!

I bought her the my little pony's that were out last year, they were still quite chunky but a with oddly big heads. Then the My Little Pony friendship is magic range came out! She has a couple of those, and the princess Celestia pony. We have gotten her more for Christmas, but I agree they are skinny and too pointy looking.

homebaked · 13/12/2011 10:32

I've been looking for an alternative to My Little Pony - just bought my dd a DVD called Saturday Stables - sneak previewed it myself to check it out - its v charming - but mostly realistic too - got mine on amazon and the website is saturdaystables.co.uk - its lovely!

FoofFighters · 13/12/2011 10:35

I collect MLPs Xmas Smile I have all mine from the 1980s - they are known as Generation 1 (G1). These new ones are based on the new MLP Friendship is magic cartoon - and are known as G4s.

The collecting community is divided on whether they like them or not - and they have spawned a new cult following, loads of guys, calling themselves 'Bronies'! It's also started a massive Pony internet meme. The art work and design is by one of the animators of the Power Puff girls.

I liked the recent ones in early 2000, which actually looked like the old style ponies. These new ones are so ugly Xmas Sad

ViviPrudolf · 13/12/2011 10:36

They look a bit manga these days don't they? I remember at primary school, the wimpy prissy girls had my little pony. I did have one though, Cotton Candy. But then I was an indulged 3rd child so I had pretty much every toy on the market....

ViviPrudolf · 13/12/2011 10:37

wow, Foof thats some impressive MLP geekery

HughBastard · 13/12/2011 10:41

My Little Ho-ny

FoofFighters · 13/12/2011 10:43

YY to the names - some really suspect ones in the 80s! Pillow Talk was a favourite, along with Morning Glory, Windy, Spunky(!) Steamer, Woosie, Romper, and Floater Xmas Grin
