To be pretty blooming miffed by this?

I was bored last night and in my boredom, Googled myself (don't judge me for that lol) but what I actually found has really p*ssed me off!

Basically, there's nothing about me anywhere but on 192.com, they have my full name, name of DH, address, phone number, my age plus the value of my house how long I've lived there, and even an aerial picture of my house.

Am I late to the party on this - does everyone know this? I know a lot of this is publically available info from the electoral register but why put it all together on one big stalker-happy page?

I mean, all someone needs is your name and just the town you live in and they know all about you. Surely people could see if I was a woman living alone? See the names of my children?

I've written to them asking for it to be removed (they do that if you ask, and print off a form to send to them) and have now gone ex-directory but I'm still pretty shocked.

AIBU or is this par for the course these days?

Do you tick the box on electoral register forms (can't remember technical term but basically means you only appear on main one and data isn't shared with companies like this

valiumredhead · 06/12/2011 13:10

You are late to the party I'm afraid. Do you use an loyalty cards in shops as they will know more about you on those things than anything you can google Grin It's called information gathering. Do you go on FB?

stoatie · 06/12/2011 13:13

This describes it better (not that I live in Brent!)

Oh figsticks :(

Yes I am on FB (Although it's fully locked down so only friends I (selectively) accept can see anything (and some people can't see as much as others i.e MIL ;) ).

And no like an utter stupidhead I didn't tick that box - mainly because I thought it affected your credit rating if you weren't on the open electoral register.

I don't mind things like my loyalty cards knowing about me because they aren't likely to publish a big ol 'here's how to stalk BookNerd should you ever want to' page on the internet about me.

Its just all so creepy - all my details, pics of my house. shudder

crikey, that's not good - just did the same myself and found lists of previous addresses, parents names, old flatmates names, company info, they just stopped short of detailing pin numbers.

box or no box ticking this is too too much.

Antidote · 06/12/2011 13:35

Can I ask what you Googled? Was it just your name or other identifiers?

I only ask because I know if I Google my name, any results about me are swamped in the 3 million pages about the two Korean porn stars with whom I share a name!

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 06/12/2011 13:38

I'd be curious to know what you googled as well. If I google my name I'm a lawyer in the US. Sadly that's not actually me.

mummymccar · 06/12/2011 13:41

Yup, I found that stuff on there about myself a while back too. Printed off the letter three times asking to be removed but no avail.

antidote - it is usually if you just google your name. I flooded the internet with blog posts with my name on each though and my 123 listing is quite well buried now!

snoopdogg · 06/12/2011 13:43

Ooooh - can we hijack the thread and say who we are when we google ourselves?

I'm a contortionist. Can't reach me bleedin' toes in rl!

TheScaryJessie · 06/12/2011 13:45

Antidote, we should start a club!

Once, I received an irate call from my mother once, about my apparent, erm, activities, after she or her friend googled my name!

MrsSleepy · 06/12/2011 13:47

All that comes up from my name is my Twitter page. Absolutely nothing else

mummymccar · 06/12/2011 13:52

snoopdog - I work for the council apparently!

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 06/12/2011 13:53

I'm a rather famous Australian academic Xmas Grin She is an author and has published several "worthy tomes" that I probably couldn't even begin to understand, and seems to be very intelligent and scientific Xmas Grin She's also better looking than me too (going by her book jacket blurb picture anyway)

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 06/12/2011 13:56

OMG - it's all changed since last time I googled my name! There are 19 me's on 192 (none of them actually me!!) one who even has the same middle initial, same parents and sibling name - very fecking freaky!!!!

Does anyone know what's involved in getting credits if you sign up? Do you just have to pay for them? If so, do you know how much?

Silverlace · 06/12/2011 14:10

I have just tried it and it is scary how much information is out there. There is even a page listing me as a Company Director, which I was about 10 years ago, the company has long since folded but I am still named and my address is published too.

Splinters · 06/12/2011 14:10

Chipping, this one with the same family as you -- are you sure it isn't you?

startail · 06/12/2011 14:12

My names really common, so you get lots of me.
When I stick in my location I find 192 have muddled us and my neighbours.
No surprise, there is s longstanding postcode muddle. I'm always taking them post.

startail · 06/12/2011 14:28

Just found a lovely picture of DSIL and her DCs in their local paper.
She's very easy to find, relatively rare surname and rare spelling of her Christian name.

Almondroca · 06/12/2011 14:39

192 have my age range at 52-56 and dh (who is 12 years older than me) as 47-51! Outrageous lies! Shock

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 06/12/2011 14:41

Splinters - yes :) My parents live overseas, not in the midlands and we certainly weren't all sharing a house in 2008.

mummymccar · 06/12/2011 14:41

Just realised the OP was talking about 192. Did you know that 123people.co.uk do a similar thing too?

mummymccar · 06/12/2011 14:44

Almondroca - I just discovered that on 192.com I was 16-20 in 2011 but in 2009 I was 23-26. Looks like I'm de-aging! Hooray!

MumToTiny · 06/12/2011 14:46

I'm apparently 16-20 years old (I wish!), and live with DH and my 81 yr old next door neighbour!

MrsWifty · 06/12/2011 14:48

snoopdogg - under my previous name, I illustrated a book about artificial insemination. My husband made up a Morris Dance to the theme tune to Blackadder.

oopslateagain · 06/12/2011 14:59

I went on 192 and it only showed my name, I had to 'get credits' to even see DH's name. Angry. Is there another way to show the info?
