in hating the Littlewoods Christmas Advert?

PigeonPair · 21/11/2011 10:39

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I can't stand this advert. Aside from confusing little children who still believe in Father Christmas, it also sets the bar very high for parents! Am I a crap and not luverly muvva if I can't supply an Xbox, a Fidget, a Laptop, an Optimus Prime, a HTC Smart Phone or a Fuji Camera??). It takes the spirit of Christmas away and just comes across as grasping and mercenary to me........

It's been done at least three times.

worldgonecrazy · 21/11/2011 10:43

Hate is such a very strong term and I rarely use it, but in this case I will make an exception. It's a vile advert which suggests that parents/mum should be spending an absolute fortune or their not a proper mum/parent.

HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE!!!

kaluki · 21/11/2011 10:43

Well I haven't seen it.
I totally agree with you.
I HATE the John Lewis one too - its just so naff and cheesy, makes me want to vomit.
In fact most of the Christmas ads are quite yukky,
Bah Humbug !!!

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2011 10:45

It makes my blood boil

Mainly because of the stupid way they sing "Muuvver"

springlamb · 21/11/2011 10:46

I don't like it either. I don't like being told that Mum got Uncle Ken (or somesuch) an expensive phone. In this house 'Uncle Ken' will be lucky to get a Lynx giftset and that's all Uncle Ken would expect, us being sensible grown up people.
Also, the bits when the kids sing 'my mum's wicked' and 'my luverly luverly muvver' always come on when I am sounding off at the dc about some misdemeanor they've just committed. And it makes me think they will never sing that about me, even as I screech on about the importance of not laying your violin against a hot radiator.
Also, they would never bypass their pile of presents to deliver mine to me a la John Lewis.
And me and my female neighbours will never stride through the snow all dolled up to the nines turning on the street's Xmas lights. You could guarantee one of their feral sons would be robbing our houses in our absence.

jasper · 21/11/2011 10:46

it's awful

OhdearNigel · 21/11/2011 10:52

I think it is disgusting - if you look on Littlewood's facebook page there is a long rant about it by a woman called Fiona - that's me.

aldiwhore · 21/11/2011 10:52

I'd like to thank big companies advertising this year for completely killing off Christmas spirit.

From the M+SXfactor, to Littlewoods not only telling my 4 year old that Santa doesn't exist, but that Daddy is also nothing to do with it, and bloody Fern and Holly outrunning some pervy looking Santa who seems to have forgotten his Reindeer, its just so... shrugs MEH.

Only Aldi have nailed the Christmas ads... I like them, like them, likelikelikeLIKELIKE.... them very much.

PigeonPair · 21/11/2011 10:52

I thought it might have been "done" on here but I haven't been on MN for ages and it just came on the TV and I wanted to punch the telly. I had to vent Angry and knew this would be the place!!!

I hate it too. But.......I love the Argos one with the Blue Aliens (makes me chuckle).

One of my proudest moments. 300+ posts and counting

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 11:30

I agree, OldGrey I can just imagine the creatives at Chi & Partners having a right old snigger when the Argos marketing execs signed that one off.

onehackedoffmuma · 21/11/2011 11:32

I utterly agree - makes my blood boil every time I see it.

ObiWanWithBellsOn · 21/11/2011 12:37

I have seen the advert, I have heard the radio version, I have read the other threads. I still can't see how it blows the Santa myth out of the water.

My children, if they saw the advert, would just think that other people have amazingly generous mothers.

Where does the Santa thing come in? Or have I just been watching a later, revised version?

LaurieFairyCake · 21/11/2011 12:40

I love Christmas and loathe all the capitalist, consumerist adverts - all of them.

And I like fucking buying stuff Hmm - but they suck the joy out of Christmas.

TwoStepsBack · 21/11/2011 12:42

I really hate the Littlewoods ad. for all the reasons mentioned here and on other threads.

I want to adopt the little blue aliens from the Argos advert. I will even trade in DH & the DC for them if it comes to it.

FrillyMilly · 21/11/2011 12:46

I hate it!! Not bothered about the fact that it exposes that mum buys Xmas presents not Santa (In our house the story is we go see Santa to discuss and pay for presents). What bothers me is that fact that it's just so vulgar. I would never buy my brother a smart phone or camera or whatever. Who has that kind of money? Oh wait I don't need that kind of money as I can spread the cost of being a luvverly muvver over a year.

Littlewoodsmuvvah · 21/11/2011 12:46

Linky

This made me Grin

Merlotmonster · 21/11/2011 12:49

im loving the Blue aliens tooooo!! they are so cute

kaluki · 21/11/2011 12:52

Both my sons would stab me to get to their presents on Christmas morning!!
I'm glad I'm not alone in hating all this commercialised tripe that spews out of my TV this time of year.
(I reallly am turning into a Grumpy Old Woman Shock

pommedechocolat · 21/11/2011 12:53

Agree not sure it blows santa out the water - do others not get their children presses from them?!

It is however horribly vulgar and materialistic and some of the stuff they show on it . So Littlewoods comes off as stocking expensive shit and being crass. Not a great advertising campaign!

OhdearNigel · 21/11/2011 13:01

I am disgusted by the obscene spending this advert seems to suggest is perfectly normal. And the implication that you are only a lovely mother if you cripple yourself buying gifts you can't afford on a catalogue. Is it any wonder people are buried under ever-increasing debts ? I think it is possibly the most irresponsible advert I have ever seen, particularly as a good percentage of your target au...dience are people who probably cannot possibly afford to give these sorts of gifts and resort to catalogue shopping to spread the cost.

Then of course there is the gender stereotyping that it's a woman's job to buy presents - although I suppose the poor father is having to work all hours under the sun to pay off the Littlewoods account.
Plus the implication that your chi...ldren will only think you are lovely if you are buying them the most expensive thing you can find. There is no durability in any of the products mentioned - they will all be upgradable by next christmas thus enabling Littlewoods to make even more cash off the backs of people that can't afford it and will be having to go even further into debt to do so. And that small children (that little girl can only be about 9) need expensive electrical gadgets to entertain them, starving them of their ability to use their imagination.

No doubt you will be able to make millions of pounds this Christmas from families on the breadline that feel they have to buy very expensive gifts, encouraged by this sort of advertising

OhdearNigel · 21/11/2011 13:03

I just went on littlewoods page to try and find my post (above) - I hadn't realised the ad had cause so much rage !!

FrillyMilly · 21/11/2011 13:07

Just to add I looked on littlewoods website and in some instances these gadgets are double the price they are elsewhere. So not only are they encouraging people to buy ridiculously expensive items and to get in to debt for Christmas they are making a huge profit. I think we all know christmas is commercialised and people do overspend but I find this awful.

ViviPru · 21/11/2011 13:09

Littlewoodsmuvvah Grin

Thanks for that, can't beat a Brooker take on proceedings.
