About marmite?

I love marmite. Really. On toast, crumpets, in sandwiches etc. However, AIBU to think that it shouldn't be spread on thickly like jam? DH clearly thinks that's the way it should be when he presented me with my crumpet with an inch of marmite! Grin

Definitely Thinly spread - too much is too harsh a taste, but thin it's luuurvely

TidyDancer · 20/11/2011 19:03

Hmmm. I do like it thicker than I think the majority of people do, but then I like to let it soak into bread a bit as well, so that maybe dilutes the flavour. It certainly shouldn't be like jam though!

IneedAbetterNickname · 20/11/2011 19:03

YANBU!

ReindeerBollocks · 20/11/2011 19:05

Is your DH my DH? My DH eats it in the same way.

I can only eat it like that when on celery with cream cheese. Yum.

Damn I now want that instead of the ice lollies I've sent DH out for!

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 20/11/2011 19:06

Not like jam, but not like it's poison either

startwig1982 · 20/11/2011 19:07

I'm hoping my DH isn't your DH as it would make life a little difficult!! Grin

Is your DH a Marmite lover or hater? That could explain his mistake.

I once made a ham and mustard sandwich for DH and got got told that I had ruined it completely by putting too much mustard on there. But I don't eat the stuff, so how was I supposed to know? I just spread it the same as I spread mayonnaise.

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 20/11/2011 19:07

Reindeer - ice lollies?? Are you in the Southern Hemisphere? brrrr

cheeseandmarmitesandwich · 20/11/2011 19:15

YANBU, marmite should be spread thinly (but not tooo thin). Preferably served in a sandwich. With cheese.Grin

Or on hot buttered toast mmmmmm

ItWasABoojum · 20/11/2011 19:20

YANBU - needs to be as thin as you can get it. Ratio should be about 1/4 Marmite to 3/4 butter. Real butter, as well. Especially good on crumpets. Nom.

SuburbanCream · 20/11/2011 19:21

I agree a thin slither too. My first experience of marmite as a child though was trying it out of a jar with a spoon (bleugh). Didn't touch for a few decades after that til I tried it again in a more dignified manner. Love it now :)

ReindeerBollocks · 20/11/2011 19:21

Chipping, got a nasty gastro bug from hospital, so ice lollies are the only thing I can tolerate at the moment.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/11/2011 19:23

Spread thinly. Or as DS prefers, squiggly patterns from the squirty container

MrsChanandlerBong · 20/11/2011 19:25

I'm with Tidydancer here, I like it thicker than most but it definitely shouldn't be thick like Philly.

For the record I HATE jam too thick so it sends the bread soggy

Ripeberry · 20/11/2011 19:26

Marmite haters always spread it thickly. No wonder they hate it Grin

Reindeer - sorry to hear that. Hope you are feeling better soon! Maybe a little marmite would help?!

ChippingInNeedsSleep · 20/11/2011 19:29

Ripeberry - I think the opposite, marmite haters spread it far too thinly!!

Dawnywoo · 20/11/2011 19:29

Marmite is lush.

Absolutely must be spread thinly.

Fabulous in a sliced tomato sandwich - try it to believe it!

Andrewofgg · 20/11/2011 19:53

Marmite is rancid axle-grease to which is added a special secret gunge to make it really nasty.

It will give your dustbin ulcers.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 20/11/2011 19:56

My DH has been known to spread mustard on a ham sarnie half an inch thick too - he eats Marmite from the jar with a spoon if he gets the urge thinks I'm not looking and can easily go through one of those big fiver jars in a week...

ItWasABoojum · 20/11/2011 19:58

Oh, must add - Marmite and sliced banana on toast. Seriously good.

halcyondays · 20/11/2011 20:02

I used to eat marmite and banana sandwiches. Yes, it should be thinly spread, but people who hate marmite usually don't realise this. A jar lasts us ages even though 3 of us eat it regularly. It's only dh that doesn't like it.

ReindeerBollocks · 20/11/2011 20:03

Marmite on cheese and toast.

They also have marmite cheese too but it was a bit ick.

Chipping, thank you
