Was looking for some slippers for DP for Xmas (rock 'n' roll) and came across these:

racist slippers

I was pretty shocked tbh and think in a country where people are debating golliwogs, people should think twice benfore putting things like this on ebay?

Or are they just funny?

Arf, sorry I had to laugh at 'racist slippers'.

squeakytoy · 17/11/2011 19:29

dear oh dear....

MenopausalHaze · 17/11/2011 19:41

Picking up on what squeaky said.....

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.............

Here's a nice big fat biscuit for you OP! Biscuit

slavetofilofax · 17/11/2011 19:42

They are brilliant!

And arf at racist slippers Grin

SardineQueen · 17/11/2011 19:44

Those slippers are fucking horrible. I don't know if they're racist but I wouldn't buy them in a month of sundays. They are caricatures aren't they. Horrible.

MenopausalHaze · 17/11/2011 19:45

They tie in with the kids TV programme. That is all. Horrible they may be but racist? Purleeeeeeese.

JamieComeHome · 17/11/2011 19:46

I think they are vile. I would have to think about whether they are racist but at the moment I can't get past vile

Karbea · 17/11/2011 19:46

Umm, on that subject though. What is this rastamouse I've heard about? Surely that's as bad as gooliwogs isn't it? Btw never seen it as don't have children, so I could be way off.

gordyslovesheep · 17/11/2011 19:46

they are vile - they are fairly leaning towards being a bit racist yes

certainly presenting a stereotype but more than that they are just vile!

JamieComeHome · 17/11/2011 19:47

Menopausal - they don't tie in with a TV programme. That's Rasta mouse, not a bloke smoking a spliff

JamieComeHome · 17/11/2011 19:48

Nothing to do with RastaMouse

Karbea - Rastamouse is mouse character

tardisjumper · 17/11/2011 19:49

Quite mixed responses. What was the biscuit for? For asking if they were racist?

They reminded me of that terrible Kia Ora advert which is why I don't like them. They are a horrible caricature.

Plus I could just see some awful rah wearing them as they were 'hilaaarious'

OP posts:
IHeartKingThistle · 17/11/2011 19:59

It is a caricature, they are awful.

But the phrase 'racist slippers' made me laugh out loud. Sorry Blush

Karbea · 17/11/2011 20:00

This might be a naive question but how come rastamouse isn't racist, but gooliwogs are?

tardisjumper · 17/11/2011 20:01

@IHeart It was tongue in cheek! I panicked when I realised you have to put some extra words in to make a link. Blush

squeakytoy · 17/11/2011 20:03

Over 200 buyers seem to think they are ok... so the seller isnt going to think he made a mistake by selling them.

There is nothing racist about them at all.

sleeplessinseatle · 17/11/2011 20:11

tardisjumper what is a rah?

IHeartKingThistle · 17/11/2011 20:17

I know, I wasn't criticising!

Pekka · 17/11/2011 20:18

I think one day they might be considered racist, much like gollywogs nowadays. YANBU, in the sense that they are stereotypical and someone could easily take offense.

LadyBeagleEyes · 17/11/2011 20:22

I'm still laughing at 'racist slippers' too.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 17/11/2011 20:22

Yes, anything depicting a black character must be racist innit ? Hmm

PosiesOfPoinsettia · 17/11/2011 20:24

I've literally seen men that look like this, with spliff.

barrysnotter · 17/11/2011 20:25

My Best friend is mixed race. We have this conversation time and time again regarding things that people pick up on regarding racism etc and my BF always says the same thing..The people that always seem to take offence to so called racism are nearly always white middle class women. And that her, her family extended family and friends actually laugh about these offendees (if that's even a word) taking offence on their ethnic group's behalf.

FWIW my BF would laugh her head off at these slippers and probably buy a pair.

Feminine · 17/11/2011 20:25

They are a tripping hazard.
