I was in a department store today with my 11yo and I was tapped on the shoulder. Turned round and a lady ratted her tin under my nose with a "NSPCC, donate please". I just said take this one and I'll find you two more at home "No thanks".

But the more I think about it, she really shouldnt have (a) touched me (b) directly asked me (c) caused my mind to wander when pondering the merits of new bathroom towels.

I'm far too bone idle to write/email to the charity and the store - but it was a bit off wasn't it?

I would have been a bit miffed too. Anyway, when I was recently collecting for a charity we were told that it's not permitted (by law or local council regulations presumably, I'm not sure which) to rattle the collection tin.

You are being a little prickly about it, but I can kind of see in the right circumstances it might have annoyed me a little at the time.

But I wouldn't have thought about it afterwards, she was just trying to help out.

I have done bag packing in supermarkets to fundraiser for various dc activities and we have always been told no bucket rattling / tin shaking at customers, dont pester our customers and be respectful if they don't wish to donate.
This sounds totally off and you should consider contacting the store to complain.

She can only collect in store with permission of the store's management, so f that ever happens again, ask to see the manager and say exactly why this intrusiveness ruined your shopping experience and has led you to leave th store empty handed.

Also, I think (but stand ready to be corrected) that tin rattling is banned, so it might be worth getting in touch with th charity giving location, date and time, and say how concerned you are that collectors who break the law risk giving them a bad name.

Then go and make a donation to a charity whose aims and conduct you support.

It didnt unduly upset me - its only just popped back into my head some 8 hours later - I just thought it was a bit off!

I hate when they shake the tin under my nose. I do give cash to charitys, but only to the ones that DON'T shove it in my face.

The stand outside my local supermarket but they never approach or hassle people. They don't even speak actually...jut give the tin a gentle rattle now and then so people know they're there.

I am currently bald from chemo (breast cancer) and I have a whale of a time embarressing cancer charity collectors !
They wave their tins under my nose , then look up at me and almost run away !

In my mind, the fact that it was a charity volunteer would make me give her a bit of leeway in how she was.

It's maybe difficult for some organisations to enforce the rules about tin rattling etc, when they're relying on their goodwill.

I'm not saying that's right, or all volunteers are like this, but you can tell and tell someone something, but if you don't have the authority over them that a paid employer would have, what can you do?

I wasnt allowed to rattle my tin or ask for donations either. Made it quite hard to get noticed outside tescos!

I have heard some shockers. One bloke stood inside the shopping centre shouting on 'money for the handicapped' and a lady in a wheelchair sat next to him with a sign round her neck (I am not making this up)

Another one I heard in a sing song voice, over and over 'Kids with CANNNNCEEER, Kids with CANNNNCEEEER'

Neither of them got my money and I am usually pretty generous

I dont think she should have approached you in that way but maybe she got fed up with being ignored by everyone. It can be pretty sould destroying doing a street collection.

I remember being told that it was illegal to rattle tins when I was a RAG member at university, and finding this rather odd! But, I don't think you should be tapped on the shoulder and have a tin shook in your face, that would have annoyed me too.

standing with a tin is, apparently, within the law but rattling the tin makes it, legally, begging - I think.

It isn't hard to make sure your collectors don't rattle tins, and they certainly shouldn't be being rude like that. Volunteer or not they are still representing the charity and I am sure if they found out they would have words with them about how they conduct themselves in future.

Anyone collecting should have been briefed on what was allowed and what isn't

The NSPCC/Childline are probably at the point of having to beg for it useless

I don't think the store manager would have been happy if he/she knew this...because if one collector acted like that, well others could too.

That would be a perfect reason for me to avoid that shop all together.

I feel the end justifies the means.

You cant email the NSPCC - not without making a donation and requesting a friend does so too.

It is sad, but charity collectors make me want to run in the opposite direction. I give willingly to 4 charities by DD... I shouldn't have to explain that on the street. However, I once tried when a charity collector (who was actually from one of my 4!) asked me to sign up, on the street. The collector came close to accusing me of lying... he actually asked for proof! It's a blimmin good job that I support this charity for reasons of my own, or I would have stopped my DD there and then... cheeky bugger.

And I HATE chuggers stopping in front of me or trying to corner me let aline tapping me on the shoulder. Shit off! I give to charity all the time, once a week on average, I do not want to be hounded.
