for not wanting to have builders watching me during labour?

i'm almost 39 weeks and started my much anticipated maternity leave. we live in a block of (rented) flats and as i'm writing a massive monster of a scaffold is being put up outside - aargh, they're going to pain our bloody windows! now i'm terrified of going into labour with a squad of builders watching me. and they are LOUD (singing along to the radio and whatnot). my only consolation is that i didn't opt for a homebirth but i'm still freaking out!

Overthinking a bit aren't you? Can't you just shut the curtains?

They probably won't want to see you in labour either!

I think statistically a lot of people go into labour in the evening/night time, so they probably won't be there anyway... And of course, I have to trot out the old chestnut, 'you won't give a shit once you're in labour anyway'.

I had a home birth and there were men working outside on the road whilst I wam SCREAMING LOL. I survived, sure you'll be fine :)

Oh poor you, I had FIL and his friend working in my house when I was in labour. They were putting in a radiator, all I wanted to do was have a bath and huff and puff my way through contractions but I had to stay in my room and bite the pillow instead.
Thankfully DH came home after a couple of hours and took me to hospital, just in time too DC3 was born half an hour after I got there!

And if you do, they'll just wipe it away really quickly

Okay, talk through what exactly you think could happen. There won't be anything to see, I would think. It's rarely like Eastenders, where women only realise they're in labour because they need to push right now.

You'll probably feel uncomfortable with contractions for an indeterminate amount of time, so you'll pace about trying to distract yourself for a while. And then you'll go to hospital.

Ooh I would tell the boss about what may happen. Otherwise they'll hear you and phone the police or somthing daft.

and an hour or two later...

Think Positive. It might be nice to have the builders there as a distraction during labour - and a few extra pairs of hands if necessary Good Luck

i'd be more worried about the noise levels in the day when yuo come back form hospital and want to sleep in the daytime to make up for broken sleep at night!

Actually, thinking about it, they might potentially have finished the painting by the time you go into labour!

But seriously, you will not have to give birth to a baby while surrounded by frightened builders. High-speed birthing is unusual!

ha ha, I had next-door's roofers listening to the sound effects through my last stages of labour.

It started as SqueakyToy describes - hospital, home again, only then things speeded up all of a sudden so we had to call an ambulance, which took a while to come, so the roofers got a front-row view of screaming woman being helped into ambulance, then a moment later a baby starts crying....

It was the most exciting thing to happen in the village for yonks.
Two years ago yesterday

Next day, school run time, one of the roofers was saying to the other parents 'You'll never guess what we saw yesterday' and I pointed to the baby in my sling and said 'Er, yes, that was me!'

It was funny. Please don't worry about anyone hearing you, it really doesn't matter.

ok, i seem to be overthinking. not worried about actually giving birth in front of a big audience, it's more the thought of seeing my (romanticised) idea of a tranquil first stage going out of the - freshly painted - window here...

You'll just draw the curtains, put on some headphones, and potter around the flat. Although you may find that listening to the builders is distracting.

I tried to knit, and threw my needles down in frustration, because I just couldn't concentrate!

As a fellow 39 week pregnant lady I can see your point!

I am having so much practice contractions etc and everytime it happens I want everyone but DH to go away and go into my own world and have privacy.

I suppose Im like a cat when it comes to giving birth....!

i had an eastenders labour, if my husband hadnt been there i probably would have had to ask the builders for help hoping the one due in januar is slower than her brother!
