To hate mac and cheese

Not the dish, but the term. I've always called it plain old macaroni cheese and am very happy with how it rolls off the to tongue. Has it always been mac and cheese or is it a very annoying Americanism? It seems everywhere- Lorraine Pasquale, article in the Guardian. I know I am being an old fogey (probably) and this might be better suited to pedants' corner but I felt overwhelmed with rage (or mild annoyance) when reading it this morning. Anyone else?

Kat admittedly I have only had that in a restaurant. In Chelsea. But it was delicious.

Mac n' Cheese is an American concoction by Kraft and is a luminous yellow colour. Usually appears on kid's menus in US together with Peanunt butter and jelly sandwiches, hot dog , apple sauce (why?) and grilled cheese.
Have also seen lobster mac n'cheese for sale in US and the idea just makes me heave.
Mind you, I hate Macaroni Cheese also - like cheese sauce, like pasta but hate them together.

I always thought it was something to do with burgers until recently. My niece has just been in US and started posting about mac and cheese on facebook and i realised what it was.

We used to have a greek version which is has minces meat and herbs in it called Pastitsio

ooh pastitsio is delicious! Mmmm, this is all making me rather hungry now...

I don't know what the Kraft thing is like (does it contain real cheese? quite a lot of american products use some sort of synthetic cheese substitute, can't remember the term...) but anyway, for true vileness try a can of Heinz macaroni cheese. I can't imagine anyone buys it more than once. Really sickly (caveat - my one sampling was at least 25 years ago so maybe its no so bad now)

YANBU. We always say macaroni cheese in this house. Actually haven't heard anyone around here say mac and cheese.

Mmmmmmm, despite my irritation at the name, thinking about it made me hungry and we have just sat down to some with leeks mixed in. Will need to nip to Tesco's (?) for some truffle oil minipie.
Yes, flm - I know it's ridiculous, but on the other hand life's too short to pass up the chance for a bit of a rant.

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese - in case anyone wants to buy some.

We call "Kraft" (or any packaged brand) macaroni & cheese either "crap dinner" or "kraft dinner", some people call it kd. But homemade macaroni and cheese we call macaroni and cheese. I like the macaroni cheese name, and cauliflower cheese names, I will try and convert the family to calling them that.

Ok what is grilled cheese? Is it cheese on toast??

Hairybeaver my dad calls cheese on toast grilled cheese but think it's something different. Have you seen this thread? here

I thought Mac n Cheese was an American name for a Big Mac burger
