To hate mac and cheese

Not the dish, but the term. I've always called it plain old macaroni cheese and am very happy with how it rolls off the to tongue. Has it always been mac and cheese or is it a very annoying Americanism? It seems everywhere- Lorraine Pasquale, article in the Guardian. I know I am being an old fogey (probably) and this might be better suited to pedants' corner but I felt overwhelmed with rage (or mild annoyance) when reading it this morning. Anyone else?

Macaroni cheese is like cauliflower choose, except with pasta.

Mac and cheese is a strange orange artificial thing.

Therefore the phrase it useful because it distinguishes the two.

stripeybump · 06/10/2011 13:48

Lorraine Pasquale's Glam Mac and Cheese is the business though, I'm always recommending it on here. Dolcelatte and Parmesan instead of ched, and spring onions and pancetta in the sauce. Tis food of the gods.

TheSteveMilliband · 06/10/2011 13:51

I used to think all cheese was bright orange, thought maybe that was a Scottish thing as you don't see much of it down here.

YANBU

I came on to say you were BU to use the term Mac & cheese.

Scholes34 · 06/10/2011 14:53

Am cooking macaroni cheese for tea too - the Waitrose basic pasta is great - nice and long.

KatAndKit · 06/10/2011 15:06

When I read the title I thought it was going to be about Mcdonalds and the fact that you would rather not have plastic cheese in your big mac!!

Macaroni cheese is a good name for a delicious dish and I see no reason to mess with it.

TheTenantOfWildfellHall · 06/10/2011 15:11

Macaroni cheese - yummy.

Mac and cheese - just no.

SexualHarrassmentPandaPop · 06/10/2011 15:23

Haha. I just call it mac cheese so probably worse! Easy to write down when I'm planning meals though.

lynlynnicebutdim · 06/10/2011 15:33

Mac & Cheese is the brand name of the Kraft product with produces the horrible yellow plasticy stuff someone mentioned upthread. As a child i adored it. Mac & Cheese

Macaroni & Cheese is the home made stuff that is competely different.

Trills · 06/10/2011 15:40

I'd like to add Grilled Cheese to the list of cheesy food names that make no sense.

It means, as far as I can tell, a fried cheese sandwich. Not cheese that has been grilled.

fatlazymummy · 06/10/2011 15:42

Does it really matter? If you want to call it macaroni cheese then call it that. Lots of things have more than one name, not really worth getting annoyed about.

Bloodymary · 06/10/2011 16:01

Mmm, I love 'macaroni cheese', I like to add mushrooms and bacon, topped with sliced tomatoes and grated cheese.
Might have cook it tonight.

SexualHarrassmentPandaPop · 06/10/2011 16:08

I put whatever I've go in in mine. Garlic, onion, chives, red pepper. Grated cheese on top and browned in the oven with a large handful of rocket. Yum yum.

notso · 06/10/2011 16:12

Mushrooms in Macaroni Cheese. Never going to happen.

KatAndKit · 06/10/2011 16:15

cauliflower is nice in it though. A combo of two good dishes together. Jamie's 30 minute meals has an excellent recipe for it.

SexualHarrassmentPandaPop · 06/10/2011 16:17

I wouldn't do mushrooms cos I hate them but I don't see why not if you like them. Fresh tomatoes go well though.

minipie · 06/10/2011 16:17

I have never ever heard this.

I thought the thread title was talking about burgers.

minipie · 06/10/2011 16:18

Ahhh see the thread has moved on a bit Grin

Macaroni cheese with truffle oil is amaaazing

KatAndKit · 06/10/2011 16:19

wahwahwah · 06/10/2011 16:20

mac 'n cheese
where did it come from anyway?
My favourite comfort food of all time (with crice pudding)

tethersend · 06/10/2011 16:21

Kraft dayglo orange mac and cheese is one of the most delicious things on this earth. Even if you do twitch involuntarily whilst eating it.

seeker · 06/10/2011 16:25

My mother always served grilled tomatoes and a handful of homemade crisps with it when I was a child. Dp was most bemused the first time I put crIsps on the table with the mqcaroni cheese!

I made q horrid one last week- it was practically solid. Must hqe put too much flour in the saue

WhereYouLeftIt · 06/10/2011 16:29

I have never heard the term, mac and cheese.
