that just ran out from under the coffee table, waved at me and then ran away so fast I didn't have time to throw my Argos Boden catalogue at it?

My cat has just sauntered in, if it reappears I shall set her upon it. Until then then it's buttocks clenched, sitting at the back of the sofa with my feet up, DP's shoe in one hand and the MN support network at the fingertips of the other!

EW god no, I can't even imagine how disgusting it would be to have to clear up a huge squashed spider. Makes me feel faint to think about it! I'd rather it was alive, intact and happily getting on with its life in a corner somewhere.

But it isn't in a corner somewhere Nurse, it thinks it's funny to do a lap of my living room every time I start to relax :( . And I'd just hoover the massive bastard up once it was squashed if the cat didn't eat its remains first

Bahaha...the spider's right, it is kind of funny.

I couldn't even hoover it up though...the thought of a big spider shooting upwards towards me, even if it is in a hoover, is just too scary. Which is why I can't use one of these, despite how useful they look: Spider Catcher Vacuum

Really hate that spiders scare me though, it's such a pathetic, learned fear.

Learned fear? I think it is just visceral. I feel faint when i see a big 'un.

I read about an experiment a few years ago where they were trying to work out whether fear of spiders/snakes etc (ie small animals without big teeth that aren't obviously scary) was instinctual or learned, and they found that baby chimpanzees aren't automatically afraid of snakes but become so when they see another chimp being afraid of them. The experimenters tried to make them afraid of a bunch of flowers by using mirrors to make it look like another chimp was frightened of the flowers, but the baby monkeys could only learn to be afraid of snakes, not flowers.

So I guess it's both visceral and learned...that is, if you think humans and chimps have anything in common, which is another thread entirely.

I tend to think it's quite a good theory because I was never afraid of insects when I was little so blame everyone else for acting like idiots around insects and making me the same Grin

I can catch them now though - has to be a big jar, heavy book and sleeves tucked into marigolds.

Ugh, I could never use a spider vacuum thing, it would just be IN there, close to me, and they're see through aren't they, so it could LOOK at me.
Apparently there are a couple of reasons why I'm phobic, a massive one on my face when I was tiny, and the fact that I'm part Jamaican, so since spiders over there can actually harm you it's in my blood IYSWIM? Not sure how true it is, my second hypnotist told me that.
The first hypnotist's DH informed me after a session that when he's in bed he can sometimes hear them drop on to the pillow by his head . That was in the house where I went to have my phobia cured! Needless to say I never went back there...

I have a very large mirror above the fireplace in my kitchen. I was cleaning it one day and looking at it, not into it iyswim. I leaned back (on a ladder) to check for smears and caught sight of a massive spider. Was a bit Shock and then I realised IT WAS ON MY SHOULDER AND NOT ON THE MIRROR Shock Shock Shock. Fell back in horror and the THING went down my shirt. Cue hysteria.

I've had them in my hair and it didn't bother me.
