that just ran out from under the coffee table, waved at me and then ran away so fast I didn't have time to throw my Argos Boden catalogue at it?

Live and let live is my motto
Indeed I have raised my DS and DD - now teenagers never to kill wantonly or without good reason. Luckily DH can pick up veritable monsters in his bare hands and puts them outside. I can go up to a 10p piece size. Recently we found six young rats in a feed dustbin and I had to do some quick thinking - re the risk of bites and the effect of cold-blooded slaughter... I came up with the solution - they popped the bin in the Landrover and drove to some woodland 4 miles away and tipped them all out! Hmm

I actually went round to my neighbours to ask for help with one at 9pm the other night as DH was away overnight and one was sitting in the living room scaring me.

Funny thing was, all of my neighbours were scared as well (including 2 grown men), so suggested I use my vacuum as there was no way they were going to come over.

What is it Roald Dahl says in James and the Giant Peach? You must never hurt a spider, you must only help and guide her...

Killitkillitkillitkilitkillitkillitkillitkillitkillitkillit.

The rush of fear/relief when I've personally managed to squish one of the dirty, sly, creeping, fecking feckers is just beautiful.

So, update. DP came home eventually, we were sitting at the table having dinner and he leapt up and planted his size ten straight on it. So it's dead. However, this was in the kitchen and I'M NOT CONVINCED IT'S THE SAME ONE! Argh, so still paranoid. FWIW he said this one was the size of a rich tea Biscuit which sounds about right, but I aint taking no chances, I've got the hairspray at the ready today!

You are being unreasonable for wanting to kill it for 2 reasons. Firstly, it would mean you have to be in the same building as it Shock. Secondly, its friends and family will then hunt you down.ShockShock

had to get DH to deal with a large dark blob hiding in the porch this morning....urghhhh shudders!

Get a grip.
Do you kill birds that fly into your garden?
I hate cats but I don't kill the ones that come in our garden.
It's just a living creature, and quite a useful one as it will catch and kill the horrible bluebottles that land on your food and contaminate it with regurgitated rotting stuff.

redyam · 29/09/2011 11:24

Spiders are fascinating. They don't hurt you, don't eat your food, don't spread disease. They create beautiful spider webs.
However, they do eat the insects that annoy you and spread disease and eat your food.

YABU spiders are your friend.

Maamaa · 29/09/2011 11:31

Good idea to get the dog to eat them, works for me, and I can tell myself it's just nature! Only problem is one of my dogs eats them , the other brings them to me looking pleased with herself and spits them out onto my lap causing mass hysteria! Be warned-choose a hungry dog!

Bearskinwoolies · 30/09/2011 11:18

I have flyspray and swatters for flies. I have heavy books and other lethal implements for spiders. It is a creature I have an uncontrollable phobia about, and, if found inside my house, will be killed.
