Name stealing?

my brother's best friend has just named his newborn the same name as my brother's son- who is four years old. Now I know that it is a compliment, but it's the way in which he conducted himself. He didn't consult with my brother, didn't even tell him his baby had been born a week ago. My brother heard from a friend. When he rang to congratulate him, and asked the baby's name, he commented it was nice that he had named him after his son: but his best friend had the audacity to say he didn't like the name at all, it was his girlfriend's choice, also he wasn't aware that my brother's son had that name, although he had an inkling! He said they consulted baby name books, etc. My brother is understandably upset and feels betrayed. We, as a family, feel my brother's pain. But are we being terribly unreasonable, or are we justified in our emotions?

I just have an image in my head of the whole family, dressed in black, gathered together, curtains drawn and wailing. I can't get it out of my head.

SilkandSteel · 29/08/2011 16:14

All I can say is, if something that trivial causes so much upset in your family, God help the lot of you if something really serious/major occurs! Other than that - Biscuit

TheOriginalFAB · 29/08/2011 16:15

OMG, what a ridiculous reaction.

The baby has not been named after your nephew, it is just the same name.

Names can not be stolen.

No one has to consult with anyone, other than the other parents, when they name their child.

Self importance at a ridiculous level going on here I think.

Tchootnika · 29/08/2011 16:16

Quick! Storyboard it, catgirl
It's our opening scene. (Well it was. Some bastard will have nicked it by now, of course. Nothing's sacred anymore.)

of course rapaccioli - if it doesn't dry out let me know

Tchoo......

Victorian Town House. Dark - curtains drawn. Over powering, mahogany furniture. A family gather around the drawing room table, dressed in black. The women wail. The men - stern looking - whiskers - throw back their heads and rent the air with terrible cries.

A great betrayal has occured. The naming of an infant has driven this family to madness, dispair and ruin.

Timothy Spall enters the room................

Each year a top 100 of names is released for the previous year. Both my boys names are in the top 10. I am plenty angry with a lot of people.
You brother should have named his child a unique name. My sisters SiL is considering Swaylee. I kid you not. Envy

MmeLindor. · 29/08/2011 16:29

Are there any lawyers on MN today?

I want to sue a well known Swiss chocolatier for stealing my name.

My family is distraught over this.

and Megan, catgirl . And Megan.
Megan enters the room slightly ahead of Tim, as it happens, though it's hard to tell, since both are masked - thus signifying their terrible loss.
The terrible howls are silenced.
Umm...

MmeLindor - do you want in on this? We could bring in some sort of evil Willy Wonka character, see if we can get Johnny Depp on board? (Though he give me the creeps, tbh. And I've got a mate called John, so Depp's definitely out of my good books for now...)
Kettle's boiled, must be orf.

seaweedhead · 29/08/2011 16:43

You "feel his pain"?! Think you're all being a touch melodramatic.

catgirl1976 · 29/08/2011 16:45

Megan and Tim gaze into each others eyes. They know the terrible pain that has been wrought upon this family will blight it through generations to come. Yet somehow they must find a way to heal the wound.

I think now we go on a road trip?

Fatshionista · 29/08/2011 16:50

YABU. It's a name, not the end of the world. He didn't need to consult as it is his child and there are probably 'x' amount of children in the world with his name.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/08/2011 16:57

:o Is the op too busy consoling her family to come back?

Tchootnika · 29/08/2011 16:58

YABU. It's a name, not the end of the world.

That's where you're wrong, Fats. If cat and I have our way, this road movie's gonna have elements of Armageddon to it.

Am trying to get Bjorn Ulvaeus on hand, theme tune will be Abba's 'Name of the Game'. Still working on meaningful eye contact through masks, though.

Any 'Keanu's out there, btw? It's just I don't want to offend any of my potential love interests...

bibbitybobbityhat · 29/08/2011 17:05

He's definitely not your brother's best friend. Or, if he is, then your brother could do with finding some better ones.

Bloodymary · 29/08/2011 17:05

Anybody else out there as curious as me who wants to know what this amazing name is?

sjuperwolef · 29/08/2011 17:16

im so sure it'll be harry, its the only name that keeps popping in my head i'll actually piss myself if it is Grin bladder control aint what it used to be

HalfTermHero · 29/08/2011 17:39

YABVVU. Your brother does not have a monopoly on the name of his child. Pointless madness to get upset about it.

RedHotPokers · 29/08/2011 17:53

My bloody dad stole my grandfathers name, and just to make it worse, my GF stole my GGFs name, and HE stole my GGGFs name, and on and on
What a bunch of bastards! I feel pained and betrayed at the very thought of such thievery. Hmm

ZillionChocolate · 29/08/2011 17:58

"theme tune will be Abba's 'Name of the Game'"

Can't you re-work it to be "fame of the name"?

And in the meantime can someone link to the willy thread please?

VeraCanSignChocolateAndWine · 29/08/2011 18:00

My daughter well technically me stole my ggggreat grandmothers name. Mis spelling and all. Like to see her try to sue me.

MrsKwazii · 29/08/2011 18:00

And the Oscar for most dramatic overreaction goes to ....... Grin.
