Should I complain about this ice cream man?

Or just never use them again? We have a van that calls daily in our road...we rarely use it but yesterday I said the DC could have an ice cream as a treat for being so good.

I went out and was grossed out by the sight of at least half of the ice cream mans arse...his pants were so low I could see hair. He was A BIG fella too.

I wanted to walk away then but the DC would have been dissapointed...so I ordered 2 ice creams and tried not to look at the double scoops of rump which were bouncing about in the van as he busied himself making the ice creams.

He held the 2 ice creams and poured strawberry sauce on both...then...still holding the cornets...he LICKED his fist and wrist all over to catch the drips!

[faints]

I gave the DC their cornets and told them not to eat the wafer....should I complain to the company or just jeer at him when he next comes?

He didnt wipe his arse on the ice-cream, and he licked his own wrist... hardly a major health hazard Grin.

MumblingRagDoll · 19/08/2011 10:49

Yes but his hand was holding the cones! His tongue could have swiped them!

It may have.

That is horrid! Our ice-cream man looks very grubby. I ordered a ribena push up lolly, and he chose to put a blob of ice-cream on top without asking Confused.
His finger nails were soooo dirty and his overall too.He also leaned out of the serving hatch and patted dd on the head.Confused. Not used him since.

MumblingRagDoll · 19/08/2011 10:55

Well I have just fired off a complaint. They should use paper napkins surely? That's what they do in our local Thorntons.

Did you really expect an ice cream van to have much in the way of food hygiene and handling regulations? Grin

Buy from them at your peril.

MumblingRagDoll · 19/08/2011 10:57

Well yes! They're serving food and should conform to food standards advice...why not?

THey're a long established company too...local...have been here making ice cream for over 100 years ffs.

What's wrong with patting children on the head?

acsec · 19/08/2011 11:05

There was a story in the local paper about a month or so ago about an ice-cream man having a wank in his van because he was bored! I kid you not, some woman caught it on her camera phone.

Do you want some special sauce on that??

ChaosTrulyReigns · 19/08/2011 11:05

Did he call you luv?

That would be the decider.

Grin
Squiglettsmummy2bx · 19/08/2011 11:22

My mum will only buy ice-cream from the vans that wrap the cones in a serviette. We get four vans down our road & I always try & hold out for the young & very sexy ice cream man Blush

Sidge · 19/08/2011 11:24

Oh I know they should, but they don't, that's my point!

I don't know what sort of regs they are required to adhere to, you could always phone the council to ask and report him if you don't think he's following them.

AuntieMonica · 19/08/2011 11:27

acsec

that's quite disturbing, if only because the council quote was the hygiene aspectShock

gentlebreezeliveupstairs · 19/08/2011 11:45

acsec he was in his 80s, that astonished me, plus the Mum getting her son to confirm what he was doing.

Hellishday · 19/08/2011 13:43

The thing is, you have no idea what people who work with food, actually DO. Even in a top restaurant, a chef may not wash hands properly, or a waiter might have their finger in your food and no one sees.
Ice cream men are usually the most miserable set of people. Perfect for selling to small children.

RoseC · 19/08/2011 13:48

Mumbling They don't have an Italian name beginning with P do they? Either way, it's grim, but then you've heard my views on food hygiene already today Grin

ObviouslyOblivious · 19/08/2011 13:50

Yes they are a food business and must conform to food hygiene regs. Contact your local authority if you wish (but he might be registered somewhere else if he stores the van out of the area).

cyb · 19/08/2011 13:50

I called our ice cream man MUSH once. I was 8. Its not all moonlight and roses that job, you know

MrsGerardButler · 19/08/2011 13:52

I've got a particular bee in my bonnet about the ice cream van that comes to our street. I think he's charging more for cones etc in our street than he does in some other streets in our neighbourhood. I'm about to conduct a sting operation on him to confirm my suspicions. If I'm correct, WIBU to report him to the council?

cyb · 19/08/2011 13:53

Ooh covert operations! How exciting...will you wear a diguise?

Thumbwitch · 19/08/2011 13:56

PMSL at cyb calling an icecream man "mush" Grin

Um, it's pretty disgusting but y'know, not that uncommon really. I don't know whether I'd want to use him at all but your DS knows about him now so...

and in the end, germs make their immune systems stronger, it's no worse than a dog licking your hand and then you eating an icecream without washing that hand, is it?

MoominsAreScary · 19/08/2011 13:57

My grandad was an ice cream man for years and always took hygiene very seriously, he did say that alot of others don't though and their machines are disgusting

FreudianSlipper · 19/08/2011 14:01

mmm nice

i would nto worry, do you eat out in restaurants. an ex of mine was a chef he would only eat out at certain restaurant's where he knew some of the chefs as he said most kitchens are disgusting

i just stuff my face and not give it a second thought. though i did stop eating at out school canteen after dead rat was found in the chip fryer

Lonnie · 19/08/2011 14:04

Complain (and how I wish I had not read that directly after eating lunch)
