Should I complain about this ice cream man?

Or just never use them again? We have a van that calls daily in our road...we rarely use it but yesterday I said the DC could have an ice cream as a treat for being so good.

I went out and was grossed out by the sight of at least half of the ice cream mans arse...his pants were so low I could see hair. He was A BIG fella too.

I wanted to walk away then but the DC would have been dissapointed...so I ordered 2 ice creams and tried not to look at the double scoops of rump which were bouncing about in the van as he busied himself making the ice creams.

He held the 2 ice creams and poured strawberry sauce on both...then...still holding the cornets...he LICKED his fist and wrist all over to catch the drips!

[faints]

I gave the DC their cornets and told them not to eat the wafer....should I complain to the company or just jeer at him when he next comes?

really moomins? that's a worry because you can get food poisoning from ice cream...

Hold on while I go and find out which type, I know you can, but I'm not sure which bug it is.

Thumbwitch · 19/08/2011 14:10

According to this, it's Listeria. From improperly stored milk products.

You can also get food poisoning from homemade ice cream if you use raw eggs and those eggs are contaminated but that hardly applies in this case.

MrsGerardButler · 19/08/2011 14:11

I won't need a disguise as it's the DCs who use the van, not me, so he's never seen me before, and won't suspect that a covert operation is in process. I will report back on my findings.

MoominsAreScary · 19/08/2011 14:26

Yes listeria, grandad spent hours each day cleaning the machine, taking it to pieces cleaning it then putting it back together again, if your ice cream man didn't keep himself clean I'd worry he wouldn't bother going through all the trouble of cleaning the machine

I do wonder about mcdonalds ice cream, it doesn't stop me eating it though!

MoominsAreScary · 19/08/2011 14:28

I'm sure he said even in shops ice-cream should be stored in freezers on it's own as well

LineRunner · 19/08/2011 14:32

acsec I know it's wrong but I'm still laughing at 'special sauce with that?'

Thank you. Grin

I assume if you don't want your children eating knob-rubbed mr whippys then you should just opt for something wrapped from the freezer, like a cock-free Fab.

Gonzo33 · 19/08/2011 14:45

cyb I have images of go-go gadget glasses, nose and moustache set now Grin

MrsGerardButler can I come? Please Grin

Having had a summer job selling Mr Whippy ice cream and knowing how dirty the machine was, I never buy ice cream now.

The machine was never cleaned. all the time I was there, but the top was regularly taken off to stir in all the dust and dead insects sitting on the top of the mixture - all done with a dirty old wooden stick. I was only 14 so didn't think much about it, at the time, but did try and remonstrate with the boss when he insisted that I try and hide the black oil that the machine was kicking out by careful swirling of the ice cream, as I served it.

sausagesandmarmelade · 19/08/2011 14:50

Speaking of icecream....

I've just discovered Gelato Mio

Real italian style icecream in london....YUMMY!!!!
Much better than the stuff you get in icecream vans over here....

Patopopo · 19/08/2011 14:52

Just showed this thread to the wife and she commented "what do icecream van men do when they need to use the toilet and how do they wash their hands." That thought just grossed me out.

MoominsAreScary · 19/08/2011 15:11

Use a pub and wash hands in sink, unless you get a gross one with hairy arse crack who goes for a piss on the road side and then likes piss, ice-cream, juice off own hand while fingering your 99

Panzee · 19/08/2011 15:51

Thumbwitch It's E Coli - there's an outbreak in The Archers! :o

mummymeister · 19/08/2011 16:29

I used to be an env health officer which makes me wary of eating out full stop! take the vans number and report what you saw to your local councils env health dept. they may not act on this complaint but it might be that there are a number of complaints about this person and they all add up. Freudian i only eat in restaurants where the condiments, the tables, table mats and toilets are clean. if any of these are dirty and this is what the public do see then what must the bits they dont see be like!!

Thumbwitch · 19/08/2011 16:35

Panzee - that's equally possible and that's more likely from the unwashed hands and insanitary habits of the vendors than the unclean equipment.

Any which way, I don't think I'll be buying from a van again for quite a while (if ever)!

MrsBuntyCuldeSacPariah2 · 19/08/2011 16:53

I am not a clean freak. My house is clean 'enough'. I don't freak out is my children eat stuff they have dropped on the floor. I do however have a problem with ice cream vans. It could well be irrational, but I wonder how often the 'Mr Whippy' machine gets cleaned if ever.
At another, self confessed totally irrational level ice cream vans creep me out. I think they might operate on a mafia type basis. There are way too many in my town. Something fishy is going on. It's just a matter of time before a severed finger turns up in a Mr Whippy.

acsec · 19/08/2011 17:04

Linerunner glad it made you chuckle :)

Silverstar2 · 19/08/2011 17:24

Did they not eat the cone then? Blimey, my kids eat the whole thing in record time, don't think I would of been able to stop them - or want to.

Think you were being a bit precious. Kids are very unhygenic, don't you think?! It won't kill them.
