not to peel mushrooms?

MardyBra · 07/08/2011 18:08

OK if they're those great big ones, I'd peel them, especially if the skin was looking a bit manky. But if they're just normal sized, fairly fresh mushrooms, then I'd just give them a rinse, maybe cut of a bit of the stem and use them.

My mother thinks this is disgusting practice, especially as mushrooms are grown in horse manure.

I'm the same.

Big ones yes, small ones not worth the fuss

MissPenteuth · 07/08/2011 18:10

I've never peeled a mushroom in my life. I give them a good rinse, and scrape any stubborn mank off with my fingernail.

belgo · 07/08/2011 18:10

I wipe them with a a cloth and rinse them. I never peel them.

deemented · 07/08/2011 18:11

Are you supposed to wash them then?

Oooops... Blush

supadupapupascupa · 07/08/2011 18:12

i think you are meant to just wipe them.....

MardyBra · 07/08/2011 18:12

dee - my DH doesn't usually wash them, unless I get my hands on them first. I thought I'd best not mention that to DM.

I don't peel them. I don't always wash them either Blush I tend to think cooking will kill anything nasty

MardyBra · 07/08/2011 18:13

I asked DM how she manages with button mushrooms, and she tends to avoid these!

I'm with MissPenteuth.

Never in my life have I peeled a mushroom. My MIL does though.

HeavyHeidi · 07/08/2011 18:35

There are certain types of wild mushrooms (Suillus granulatus for example) that you should peel, but as UK is such a mushroom-phobic country, it's unlikely that most people would ever come in contact with those. No need to peel the supermarket ones.
You should not wash mushrooms though, they soak up too much water. Just wipe. A little horse shit never hurt anybody :o

Peeling a mushroom? Grin I have never done this! Nor washed, as they are grown in clean soil.

mrspnut · 07/08/2011 18:44

My life is far too short to be peeling mushrooms, I never wash them either.

SandStorm · 07/08/2011 18:45

Who on earth peels mushrooms? I have never heard of this practice in my life.

Punkatheart · 07/08/2011 18:47

You shouldn't wash them - they absorb water and go squishy. Wipe.

Chandon · 07/08/2011 18:51

I wipe the with a wet (ish) tea towel. Then throw towel in laundry.

Pan · 07/08/2011 18:52

I peel them - open and buttons. Never wash them for the squidgy reason.

FabbyChic · 07/08/2011 18:52

I don't even rinse them I cook them from the pack.

lastonetoleaveturnoutthelights · 07/08/2011 18:53

My goodness what a strange practice, peeling mushrooms! I've never heard of that in my life.

I also was always taught not to wash them, as they go a little mushy.

MrsKravitz · 07/08/2011 18:53

Ive never peeled them either

superjobee · 07/08/2011 18:54

never heard of it and i dont wash or wipe them either Blush we buy a wee punnet of them, chop them up into pieces and chuck them in everything whatever we are cooking Grin

Pan · 07/08/2011 18:55

nothing strange at all. gets all of the outside shit and chemicals off the little fellas, and avoids washing them. Learned this from a proff. chef.

PinkSchmoo · 07/08/2011 18:57

Don't wash them out of pure laziness. I usually flick of the larger bits of muck but not always. And DH tells me I'm obsessively clean (he doesn't know about my dirty mushroom habit though).

NettoSuperstar · 07/08/2011 18:57

I dont peel or wash them, just flick off any grubby looking bits with some kitchen roll.
