Help. Has anyone else had a child chip their adult tooth?

My DD has just returned from a play date with half a front tooth!

It turns out that it was DD V's Slide and the slide won. I have an app with the dentist for her at 9am but need someone to tell me its all going to be alright???

Phone your dentist. Do you have the chip of the tooth? If you do I was always advised to put it in milk.

happened to me! they will put some glue along the broken tooth bit and then make a replacement tooth from porcelain, its supposed to last a very long time but its very probable she will need it replacing a couple of times.

they will say she should be able to bite into a an apple, but i wouldnt risk it.

when she first has it done she may have to go back a few times because it dousnt stick, or she bites to early on soemthing.

i still have mine, but where the broken tooth or fake tooth sits next to another real tooth its caused damage they wont be able to get to as itl include either breaking my fake tooth off, or pulling out a real one.

sorry i cant be more positive, its shit.

However, i can promise it WONT hurt, tell her not to be frightened of the hissing cold air, its sharp not painfull.

Dentist was a tad useless......'Mrs Sew, we can fit her in at 9am tomorrow'.

I will put the chipped piece in milk as it is a clean (and large) chip. Thanks.

Yes. Dentist put a temporary 'filling' in to make it look normal. He can't do a permanent one until DS is an adult apparently. Sadly the temporary one came off within weeks Hmm But as it's just cosmetic I am not that bothered and neither is DS2.

is it hurting?

Yes - same tooth chipped first as a baby tooth then as an 'adult' tooth! Happened when he was - I forget - 6 or 7 maybe? Anyway - they can do marvellous things now - he had some kind of false chip shaped thing lasered onto the remainder of the tooth - it lasts years although it is prone to wearing away at which point they just add a bit more and laser it in place. Forgive me if it's not 'lasering' - I am so terrified of dentists I didn't really look that closely. However - he's 20 now and has never really known his front tooth any other way and it's fine.

She is upset as she has always been very proud of her dental care and at the grand old age of 6 she is conscious of others thinking she is different. We have been re-assuring her it is fine (then hiding in the lounge having a flap).

My friends dd is 12 recently lost half tooth when diving into a swim pool. . . Ouuucch! Dentist sorted it in two visits,perfect now and treatment wasn't painful.good luck

yes I chipped an adult tooth when I was in primary school - can barely remember now but had a false cap put on the top (it's a front bottom tooth!) and it's still there 30 odd years later! Grin

Funnily enough (not) ds2 just chipped one of his adult teeth last night - this is the second small chip in his brand new big teeth - he's only 7 and doing damage to them already Hmm No massive chips though yet....

dd had an altercation with an iron bar and lost about a third of her front tooth some years ago. The first 'filling' came off quite quickly, but the second one has been there for ages now & isn't noticable.

I think depending on nerve damage/exposure there may be a chance the remaining tooth turns black, in which case I'm not sure what they do, but if not the cosmetic fixes are pretty good.

I did it (a fairly small chip) and when I was 19 had a veneer.

My BIL did too and had a cap

I'm no expert but as far as I am aware milk is slightly acidic and also quite sugary, therefore I would strongly recommend getting the dentists advice before leaving her tooth in milk.

My son had his adult front tooth sliced off to the gumline with a hockey stick when he was 8. He had a temporary crown on for 3 years while the root of the tooth closed fully, then had a permanent porcelain crown fitted when he was 12. He's 14 now, and his teeth are beautiful!

The milk thing is only if the whole tooth has come out and it's only to keep the tooth in on the way to the dentist - not an over night thing!

If it's just a chip the dentist will probably build up a new filling and depending on how good he/she is at doing it will depend how long it will last - we had one that lasted 18 months then a crap dentist who did it 3 x and each time by the morning it had come off again ( grrrrrrrrr!) this time hopefully (fingers crossed) it will last longer, 6 months so far. It's a real PITA!

DS1 had a big, jagged chip smashed off his front tooth when he was about 8 or 9. Made me feel sick. Sad The dentist filled it with a tooth coloured filling, on a slight angle as that was how it chipped. I was gutted, he has perfect teeth otherwise. Now, it's just him. You get very used to it. It's just cosmetic. He can eat apples, it's never fallen off. He can have a veneer when he's an adult.

ds1 had a bit of his front tooth chipped off before Christmas (he was also 6). It was at school and the bit was never found. They can't do anything for him until all his adult teeth have come through then they will cap it. In the meantime it doesn't bother him but Sad

I chipped my tooth when I was 7, hadn't quite worked out the brakes on my bike and used a tree to stop instead. I had a temporary filling for a while but it kept breaking off because of something to do with my jaw. Got it put in properly when I was a bit older and have had it for ages now. It's fine, you can't see it at all. I actually can't remember which side of the tooth it's on.

It remains the only filling I have at the grand old age of 32. So she can still have years of perfect teeth ahead of her.

I did this to my adult tooth. I had a filling, it came out a couple of times when I was younger but hasn't come out since I was 12. You can't tell at all now I'm older.

Yes, I chipped my front tooth on the bottom of a swimming if you'll believe it!

Dentist put a cap on it - good as new. Had the cap replaced in my 20's - now I'm 40 and you'd never know.

She'll be fine!

oooggs it wouldn't have made any difference even if they had found the chipped tooth, they can't reattach it. Why can't they do anything until his adult teeth have come through? They fixed ds's and he only has 5 adult teeth. MIght be worth a second look if it bothers your ds or you.

ds1 has his front 2 adult teeth (right one is chipped) but they are wide apart and too big for him!!! They wanted to wait until his teeth either side have come through and pushed the big 2 together before they sort it. He had to have xrays to prove that the other 2 were there lurking in the background as they are that far apart. He had perfect teeth until he started loosing them.

Thankfully he isn't bothered and when he is older they will cap and brace them

I smashed my tooth off a pavement when I was 11 and had to get a cap fitted. 40 now and have only had to replace it once
