My DD has just returned from a play date with half a front tooth!

It turns out that it was DD V's Slide and the slide won. I have an app with the dentist for her at 9am but need someone to tell me its all going to be alright???

yep. dd1 smashed one of her top front teeth about three months after it came through. on easter saturday. with a dance show four days later. Grin so we spent easter at the emergency dentist, rather than hunting for eggs and eating chocolate...

tis fine. it was about four years ago now. they did warn her not to eat apples/ raw carrots as the fake bit would ping off (in fact the first one came off on a super sticky lolly the day before we were due to go on holiday ) but the second one has been in place for three years or so now and you can barely tell. i was gutted. but tbh it's barely noticeable and she can choose to cap/ veneer as an adult if she feels strongly about it.

the dentist wouldn't fix it straight away in our case btw - they wanted to wait a week to let the swelling go down, and make sure the rest of the tooth wasn't going to come out - to give it the best possible chance of staying put. (both front teeth were abit mangled - the other one has a hairline crack but has been fine so far - four years.) she hasn't ever had anyone comment on it either.

it seems like a disaster at the time, but it isn't really too catastrophic tbh. i was alarmed at how alarmed i was about the aesthetics!

I am a Dental Nurse. A chipped front tooth will normally be repaired with a tooth coloured filling...they are very good and you will not be able to see any difference.

One of my children smashed both front adult teeth at the age of 6 into two 'fangs'. They had temporary fillings for a while and a few years later had an adult sized permanent porcelain crown on both teeth (which had to be filled down a little extra). They are all fine and said child is now nearly 18.

Don't worry, it will get sorted and they do everything to make it look absolutely normal for your child.

I did when I was 8, I have to have it repaired every few years when it falls off, comes under filling prices so it's around £50. Different dentists vary on how well they do it, my current one is indistinguishable from real tooth. It's a bit annoying but really no big deal.

I take it is an adult tooth (if it is her baby tooth they will do nothing) the bit can occasionally be put back on but it dependss on how it is broken and how quick sounds like you are being seen within 24 hours of incident so may have a chance don't quote me, that it can be done as advice means nothing when you can not see injury or examine patient it 's just a general summary.

keep the piece even if they do not stick it back on ( it gives an idea of the shape and angle her natural tooth was so it can be replicated)
tomorrow is an emergency appointment and will be a temporary filling how old is DD?
white filling are really good and it would mostly take a dentist to spot it was filled, only if a really big chunk like more than 50% or nerve damaged will you possibly need veneer crown , a small chip can survive with a white filling for the rest of her life( the filling will need replacing though) all treatment for kids is free under NHS but get quote if not NHS but it does need doing tomorrow as if left several days risk nerve damage

She has been to the dentist and had the broken piece 'cemented' on!

The dentist was happy to do this although it will not last her into adulthood it should see her into her teens. It is nice to see her smile today, even if she has developed the ability to whistle due to the slight gap it has left Smile

Wow, they stuck it back on? Brilliant.

carabos · 05/08/2011 17:11

DS2 broke a bottom front tooth in half in a skiing accident which was a pity because he has fab teeth. Dentist crowned it and its indistinguishable from the others, properly colour matched, sized etc. He will need to have the crown replaced at some point, but so far so good.

I chipped my front tooth when I was 7. The dentist sorted me out, you'd never know! I'm 39 now & it's still
there! Don't worry.

bestmate · 05/08/2011 17:16

Or son has chipped his front one, we don't even know how!! Every time he has a mould taken for his gum shield the dentist advises the replacement part may come off, it hasn't as yet, and we are 2 years in, you can't even tell!

kaid100 · 05/08/2011 19:01

Yes, it happened to me when I was a child. We went to the dentist and they had a paste which they put against the remaining tooth, and sculpted to the shape of the missing part. I had to not prod the paste for a few hours, and watch what I ate. You wouldn't know to look at me there was anything up with my teeth.
