I've recently moved house and met a new bunch of people. I've also just been away for a few weeks visiting family overseas. I arrived back yesterday morning after a very long trip. I sent a text to my neighbour asking if she fancied popping over for coffee and a catch up - she said she was busy today but could come over tomorrow morning - fine. I've just received a text sent to everyone in our bunch of friends (and to me too) saying "coffee morning tomorrow at graceandbeauty's house".

I think it must be a misunderstanding but I didn't plan for 6 or 7 ladies and don't have anything to give them! I just meant for my neighbour to come and spend an hour but now she's told them all and I don't have the car tomorrow to go and get anything! Now wondering if I should say something but it looks so picky.....AIBU?

Say something or risk being walked all over time and time again. She's taking the piss and I would trust her again with anything to be honest.

Send a text to everyone, including your neighbour, saying "There's been a misunderstanding! I'm just back from holidays and have loads to do and no food in. Let's make it another time soon - I'll be in touch."

What a nerve, inviting half the neighbourhood on your behalf, the cheeky mare!

Text them all back saying 'and cakes are on cheekyneighbour!'.

Yes, it's odd but unfortunately you will look unfriendly if you tell everyone they're not welcome after all. I would let your neighbour know that you weren't planning for a whole party and that she's going to have to step up to help out with refreshments though.

Exactly, I don't want to look unfriendly especially as these are new friends, AND we do often, but not always, meet up altogether. Maybe they are more laid back than me and can throw things together easily. I think I'll go ahead but somehow let them know it's not what I had planned, and hope they all bring something....

Take it as a compliment! You've only just moved somewhere and you already have a bunch of people who want to all come over and see you and a friend who obviously considers you and her good enough friends that she can be this cheeky!

I'd go with the flow on this occasion and enjoy.

Actually after re-calculating make that 12 kids.

I do have plenty of wine actually. If we start drinking at 10am maybe no-one will notice the kids and the fact that there is no food.

I'm very jealous! Would love to have a friendly neighbour and a bunch of friends to pop round.

Well as it's school holidays I'm assuming they will all bring the kids. A couple of them have nannies/au pairs so might not.

Can't get out to shops - no car. I can make popcorn. Is there any kind of cake/biscuit you can make without butter - I have eggs, flour, sugar, milk.

Can you get stuff in this evening? If it's a one off then I'd give her the benefit of the doubt.

Who has the car? Supermarkets stay open 24 hrs, so they could always pick up butter.

I can't get out at all so will have to manage with what's in the house which is not much! Drinks will be fine, but food will be apple slices/popcorn for kids....and mums!
