Sorry about that. It was me who started the KrispyKreme thread a few weeks ago but I am not doughnut obsessed, honestly! I only buy them on Fridays for a tea-time treat, and even then not every Friday.

Right here is the thing. I have just been in the Tesco metro near where I work to buy a bag of five jam-filled doughnuts, which cost 60p. As I picked them up I noticed that there were two other varieties of doughnut also on sale so I decided to investigate.

A bag of five custard-filled doughnuts came in slightly cheaper at 55p.

Then the third variety I could see cost 70p for five. "What's in those?" I though, as you would. Well I was slightly flabbergasted to see that they were mere ring doughnuts.

Now, AIBU to wonder why, if you can get doughnuts filled with custard for 11p each and doughnuts filled with jam for 12p each, anyone would shell out 14p for a doughnut filled with nothing - not even doughnut!!

Explanations anyone?

Jam type doughnuts are made from dough by the bakers using an automated machine and get fried all together in big trays, in a giant deep fat fryer thingy.

Ring donuts use an instant cake mix stuff, not true dough. The go through a different machine that blobs them in 2 at a time and is a much slower process.

I can't stand jam filled doughnuts so would pay for ones with nothing in the middle, were the ring ones glazed? OMG they are so good- this thread has made me want a doughnut I think 5Foot5 is an evil genius :)

I think rings are more expensive as they are an American style whereas the jam ones are British (but then i would have thought custard would be the same price as the jam).

I'd love some fresh ring doughnuts, still warm, dusted with cinnamon, please.

The Tesco ones are work of the Devil, really chemical taste to Jam, i have banned them from the house unless its a doughnut emergency forever.

I stand transfixed by the churros makers' stalls in Spain, and I can watch candyfloss makers for hours.

Ooh, I've just come home with some doughnuts (jam)! I was very impressed with my decision to not give into the permanent '2 for £1' offer.

I only have one thing to say - Sqonuts.

I just love doughnuts, just so old school. You'll all be too young to remember Fanny Craddock the t.V cook, but once when she was on live t.v cooking doughnuts with her hen-pecked husband Johnny he said "Nobodys doughnuts have holes like Fannys" .

The best doughnuts in the world, bar none are made by Gilberts of Leigh on Sea. They have a shop opposite one of the local primary schools, and it is damn near impossible to walk past their Window of Temptation!

They use tiptree jam in their doughnuts - and I soooo want one now!!

I wasn't a doughnut fan until a few months ago when I tried a pippin's doughnut which were being sold on a stall at my local farmers market.......cannot rate them highly enough. All sorts of fillings, some glazed....all delicious.

OP - if you want to be truly genius, buy the jammy or custard doughnuts, cut out and scoff the middles, then take the now ring-ed doughnuts back to the shop and ask for your money back. You will not only make money on your original purchase, but will also have the joy of the jammy or custardy middles for free too. Genius and not to mention Foolproof. >>dribbles deleriously to self
