I have just dyed my hair. I haven't done it for months and it got to the point that half my hair was mousey brown the other half black.

Now I usually use 2 packs of hair dye. I only had one so only did my roots thinking that it would al least make my roots match my tips.

BOY WAS I WRONG Blush

I look like brown and black stripy jumper

I am going out to buy more dye this-afternoon.

Anyone want to share their hair dye disasters before I face the hordes of Saturday shoppers?

happywheezer · 23/07/2011 13:53

Had blonde hair, tried to dye it dark brown, went green
had blonde hair, tried to dye it Rhianna red, went pink, except I never realised. Was doing a fashion course at the time and the taecher wrote in her notes that I had pink hair to remember me by.
I've had it white blonde where the dye burnt my fingers but I loved it all.
I now have rather dull blonde hair with plenty of grey.

DontCallMePeanut · 23/07/2011 13:59

Tried to dye my hair pillar box. Had to bleach my hair first, and didn't realise I didn't have enough bleach. So ended up with v patchy hair. Blush

It's been black since two weeks after that.

I'm with happywheezer - mine dyed blonde, tried a dark one on top, went green. Tried another one over the top, didn't take - my boss told me I looked like an 'animated zebra';........so I had it all cut off to an inch all over and started again!

madonnawhore · 23/07/2011 14:27

Two words: Sun In.

mandoo · 23/07/2011 14:30

Went on my first parent free girlie holiday at the age of 16. We all thought 'sun in' would turn us into sun kissed goddesses. Of course all being dark haired, with the exception of one girl, we all turned into the ginger crew!

GollyHolightly · 23/07/2011 14:33

Not mine (thankfully) but I bleached dd's hair (teenager before anyone starts yelling at me for dying a child's hair). It had already been dyed a darkish brown. The roots went white and the rest barely changed colour Grin

I rushed her round to the nearest hairdresser to see if they could fix it and they advised me to bleach it again Shock

I bleached it five times that day Shock

It didn't fall out Grin

EauRouge · 23/07/2011 14:40

I tried to lighten mine at home. I ended up with orange and yellow hair which then went a fetching shade of olive green when I tried to dye it back brown.

TheMagnificentBathykolpian · 23/07/2011 14:44

I have 2.

My hair was bleached blonde and I decided to have pink streaks in it. I was about 14 or 15 I think. I got my dad to help me. I put the cap on and got him to pull bits through the cap. I then put the dye on.

When it came time to rinse it out I did, I pulled off the cap and then I realised that I had put the cap on while my hair had a deep side parting, so somehow my dad had managed to pull through unevenly and I ended up with blonde hair with a pink clump.

My other one was far later. I wanted red hair. I decided to lighten it first so it would go really bright red. Washed it all off, dried it. My hair was a bright pink/orange.

I ran an agency at the time. I walked into the office and my staff looked at me and said how lovely my hair looked.

Bloody liars! Grin

Muckyhighchair · 23/07/2011 14:45

Not a true disaster, but when lighting my hair from bright red to blonde I used a product called colour before4, it's not a dye a sort of eazer. Well I went bright orance, thank god I had the Haida dressers booked at 9 the next morning. My dp couldn't stop laughing

MindtheGappp · 23/07/2011 14:47

My worst is going to the hairdressers the day before a big event and the dye not taking.

BagofHolly · 23/07/2011 14:48

I'm having a Hair Fail as I type. I have 100 guests coming tomorrow for a function. I thought I didn't need my roots doing but then my mum said I did. Couldn't get in at the hairdresser, decided to do them myself. I put on the colour then fell asleep in the bath. The roots are ginger. Radioactive fecking orange and the rest is a dirty beige. It's ghastly. So now I'm going to have to put another colour over the top to even it out.

Home hair colour: like home dentistry. Possible but best avoided.

PennyWarrender · 23/07/2011 14:50

My hairdresser asked me if I fancied "something a bit redder." ? I said yes and she dyed my hair a lurid aubergine colour. I looked like Dot Cotton.

My sister dyed her hair black instead of her usual dark brown. She was appalled at the results so bought some colour stripper to get it back to normal so she could start again. While it worked she decided to write some Christmas cards, and unfortunately did so leaning against the radiator. The heat obviously acted as an accelerant, so when she took the towel off she had one great big white patch where her head had touched the radiator. She had to phone the hairdressers for an emergency appointment to have it all cut off. Luckily, it was during the era of the Spice Girls so having big bits of white in her hair - albeit in totally the wrong place - still looked sort of OK. But only sort of.

TattyDevine · 23/07/2011 14:51

13 years old, light gold/brown hair, decided it would look good black.

Dyed it black. Permenant.

Whilst dye was taking I decided it would also be a good idea to dye my eyebrows black to match

I also have 2.

Inecto hint of a tint - copper - aged 15. I wash my hair hanging my head over the bath, which means I always used to put the shampoo/conditioner etc. on the back of my head then work it through. BIG mistake doing this with the hair dye - all the colour "took" extremely violently in that patch first and barely touched the rest - so I had a big magenta patch on the back of my head. Luckily it wasn't very noticeable unless I put my hair into 2 bunches/plaits (which I had a tendency to do at school at that time...)

That hair stuff that comes in a triangle box - was it Harmony or something? Aged 23. Used one called Flame Fox or some such - having learnt from the previous episode ^ I made sure I put it evenly on all my hair. But it still didn't work - it only "took" on the sun-blonded bits at the front, so I had a bright orange halo at the front and the rest was still its normal gingeryblonde shade. I had to buy a second box to do the rest, making sure I avoided all the front bits.

A colleague I worked with also liked to dye her hair red, I think she was using the same stuff as me - anyway, she was dying hers when the phone rang and like an idiot, she answered it - and was on the phone for 40 minutes. Her head looked like it was on fire! And because it was a semi-permanent, took ages to wash out.

I don't dye my hair now. If it needs doing, I'll get the hairdresser to do it, it's safer.

HengshanRoad · 23/07/2011 15:31

From long blonde hair, I went to a ginger Miranda from SATC-style crop in the space of a day and too much bleach. I was only trying to touch up my roots, but ended up burning my hair so badly that the hairdresser had no choice but to shear most of it off...

duckdodgers · 23/07/2011 15:46

This thread has made me smile, Ive had loads!

When younger dyed my light brown hair a really dark black/blue colour, I thought it was permanent. Same night I went to a conert - got hot, sweaty etc, soon my friend noticed that dye had started to run down my face. Either I hadnt washed it out properly or it wasnt as permanent as it should have been!! It wasnt long before I looked like an extra from a horror film, and worse it went into my eyes - I then seemed to take an allergic reaction to it and my eyes started to swell up. I spent most of the concert peereing through little slits Grin

And then there was my infamous 2 tone hairdo - remember this was the 80s so I thought it would look nice with the top bleached blond and the bottom half left brown. I was going to my cousins wedding so thought it would look cool - what on earth possessed me to book an appointment at the hairdressers on the morning of the wedding?!! Needless to say hairdresser ran out of time so only had time to bleach it first - and no time to put toner colour on. I went to the wedding looking like a load of canaries had died on my head. Not quite the image I was after. It was days later before I could go back.

That's what colour b4 is for

I'm by no means connected with this but it does work and stops you from ruining your hair

frownieface · 23/07/2011 20:05

ahh all sorted Grin. My hair is like straw but at least it is one colour.

DartsRus · 23/07/2011 21:14

I home dye my hair all the time without problems. Usually a mid-light brown to cover premature greyness (I started turning grey at 23, it's common in my family).

However, I once let my mum try streaking it, but she pulled too much through and I ended up blonde (not a good look for me). The 2nd problem I had was caused by a hairdresser. I wanted bright blue streaks (as a teenager), and I had dark hair. Unfortunately the hairdresser didn't bleach the streaks before adding the colour, so it left me looking like I had black hair.

I went back and had it re-done, and it did look good then!

Mandy2003 · 23/07/2011 21:33

I was going to post but - my disasters were identical to thumbsnoseatSnapewitch - except I was 13 or 14 I think, and the colour involved was Honey Hazel!

GreenEyesandHam · 23/07/2011 21:45

Yup 13 or 14, one of those wash in, wash out ones.

Rich mahogany my arse, 'Ford Fiesta red' more like. And wash out? No. Grew out.

celebmum · 23/07/2011 22:16

I've home coloured my hair for years and recently got a bit cocky putting one on thinking I didn't need a mirror....Hmm

Ended up with a black forehead and had to have a fringe cut in! Grin

lilyliz · 24/07/2011 01:54

when about 13 friend and I decided to bleach our hair,so daft we used domestos,no kidding realised we had got it wrong when hair broke off.Years later used mahogany rinse and took kids swimming, came out of the pool flourecent pink, decided to remain mousey brown after that.
