Dsis has bought Dn (3 weeks old) a pair of Ugg boots but cannot pay her mobile phone bill. She has no house phone and now no mobile she cannot contact us and we cannot contac her. This seem crazy to me. AIBU?

I think that sort of thing (i.e utterly frivolous but quite cute) makes excellent presents, but clearly madness if you cannot afford basics.

Does your sister have financial difficulties in general - is this perhaps a symptom of bigger things? Not being able to afford a landline and then even get £10 to top up a phone when you've just had your LO seems worrying to me.

I only say this because I went through something similar with an Uncle as I was grwing up/teen - he was always very generous with money (to the point where it made people uncomfortable) but as I grew up I later saw that it was basically a coping mechanism - his debts grew so large that he adopted a very bizarre "what's the point?" attitude, as if by acknowledging his debt (by even one small step such as saying he can't afford a birthday present) he'd have the whole lot to face. Which he couldn't do. (Until much later - he's doing fine now.)

I'm sure your sister is fine, but, it does seem very odd that she'd spend money on something so obviously frivolous as branded shoes for a newborn that it really did strike me as the type of thing my Uncle was doing, and did more of the bigger debts became.

My bil and sil have bought their new baby two pairs of Uggs. They have posted over 100 pics of her in the boots on Facebook.

Mind you, they are two of the most shallow human beings I have ever come across.

Hmmm there is another thread atm about things that are "naff". I think baby ugg boots could go on the list. Still - I suppose it is your DSis's money and she can spend it how she chooses although it doesn't seem like the wisest financial strategy. Is she having problems with debt in general? It is possible she hasn't actually paid for the Ugg boots but is sung catalogues or other lines of credit whilst not being able to pay things that require actual funds, like the phone bill.

Maybe have a gentle chat but if she is in trouble don't be surprised if she is defensive

I got given 2 pairs of Ugg style boots for DD when she was a newborn, put them on her once for all of 5 minutes cos they just don't stay on babies feet.

i got dd a pair of ugg type boots from h&m for the princely sum of £4 they were great for winter and looked SUPER cute, but no way on earthy would i ever spend that much on babies booties!

oh and the ones i had DID stay on her feet, they had velcro at the side and that meant that they stayed on well, have had other shoes etc that come off but these pretend uggs never did :)

why not buy em down market like everyone else?
