Trolling seems a regular occurrence on MN but some are more obvious than others. As mothers we like to think we instinctively sniff out such creatures, but what exactly gets us thinking? Without berating those with genuine problems with benefits, work patterns, mental health etc.

Why do you ask?

NonnoMum · 30/06/2011 13:19

A few things...

i.e I've never posted before but my friend/sister said you were all lovely - so false flattery - everyone knows we area brood of vipers...

  • random "facts" that don't seem to make sense, such as an American soldier based in Wales on a tour of Afganistan...
  • aggressively answering the kind suggestions of other posters...

Will that do for starters?

People posting a lot about money problems in a very short space of time and asking for money help.

I've only seen that once in 5 years.

EricNorthmansMistress · 30/06/2011 13:36

cliches
'my benefit claiming neighbour has three boyfriends living with her all claiming DLA while she makes £££££ on the side and has a giant tv, AIBU to shop her?'
'a muslim looking man shouted forrin words at me on the tube whilst wearing a backpack and looking at my DD- AIBU to report him to the police as a terrorist peedo?'

Things that are designed to get people riled. That's only one kind of trollery though - and fairly harmless. The 'I was raised in a box under a railway bridge, my parents both died in a fire, then my cat died, and I had to raise all 27 of my siblings with an income of tuppence ha'penny a week' type are just shit.

People who start with..."I've been lurking for ages but have only just plucked up the courage to post"

Perhleease Hmm

worraliberty · 30/06/2011 13:38

Sorry...meant to add, and then they go on to post a really contraversial topic

tazmin · 30/06/2011 13:40

lurker but namechanged - WTF!

anyone who is devastated at post 1, yet by post 100, is just fine and dandy and preparing to scale Mount Everest

OTheHugeManatee · 30/06/2011 13:44

I think the most stylish sophisticated trolls are the ones who start out with a seemingly innocuous dilemma, then post more and more outlandish details as the thread goes on while vigorously defending their own position and refusing to take any of the sensible advice offered.

Some of them are really Grin though. That thread about the super-rich SAHM who fancied her gardener got more and more like a bad Mills & Boon the more it continued. It was one of the funniest things I've read on MN ever, until it got deleted.

Sorry this is probably the wrong topic but I couldn't think where it should have gone.
