im 50yo I usually buy my sons piriton at my local chemist but decided to just get it with the shopping in ASDA , when I got to the counter she asked umpteen questions on the age who why what for as if she was my GP its piriton I need it for my sons allergy whats the problem im not under 18 for gods sake she refused ive no idea why she wouldnt say , really peed me off I had to then go out of my way again somewhere else to buy it at another chemist who didnt ask anything at all just sold me it .

I know we have certain medicine guidelines here in Ireland (I had to answer loads of questions trying to buy paralink for The Baby).Maybe they are being introduced there?

Was she asking how old your son is? Piriton tablets are not meant for children under 6 and the syrup not for children under 1.

I've also seen references that it should be 'used with care' in elderly people - not that I'm saying 50 is elderly, I'm nearly 55 myself!- but she may have thought you were older than you are.

Maybe some people are using allergy medicine as a sleep aid.I remember reading about a child who was dosed on phenergan and brought out begging.

There are guidelines on medicine sales. They are supposed to ask questions and if they don't in theory the pharmacist may be disciplined or even struck off by the professional body by not 'supervising medicine sales' properly' Some of the guidelines annoy the staff too so there may have been a reason. However,if they ever have to refuse a sale of something it is completely unprofessional to not explain why.

Yes here in Ireland you can not even buy Nurofen pain killers without being given the third degree . I was once hand a permission slip from my pharmacy to be signed by my GP or they wouldn't sell Nurofen to me Ridiculous

You just say, 'Yes, it's for me. Yes, I've taken it before. No, I'm not on any other medication.'

Lol elmo I was refused solpadeine after my last CS.I had to send DH down with my hospital discharge note.

I was once refused cough medicine as the woman said she 'suspected' that it was for my coughing infant who I had with me and was not for my school age child who I didn't.

Ah you should have told her that the infact is on twenty smokes a day and thats why s/he was coughing.

They should tell you the reason it is refused, not treat you like a child who can't be trusted with the information.

My pharmacist often questions my consultant at the hospital over her prescriptions she phones her up in front of me and they argue over dosage etc - very entertaining but worrying some times
My consultant actually asked me to change chemists as she's sick of being pestered by pharmacist .

I explained his age 11 what its for ect ect and she still refused and was quite short I know sometimes if your not a reg customer they are supposed to ask but piriton liquid for an 11 yo with an alergy is exactly what its for she had no reason to refuse she was just rude and jumped up and acted like I was a kid buying it you can tell im about the age I am i look slightly younger certainy not retirement age lol I would understand if I had a little toddler or baby and looked 18 but to ultimately refuse is ridiculous especially with no explanation just made me furious as it was nearly pick up time for school run and had to then go somewhere else I shall never use them again for meds ill have to be carefull they will refuse me wine and glue next

then theres this rule of how many pain tablets you can buy over the counter thats so stupid if you want to OD you would just go from chemist to chemist till you have enough no one can stop you if you cant get the tablets theres always a train lol

I would complain to ASDA. Whilst the pharmacist has to use their professional judgement, I think you should have had an explanation.

haha I just rememberd my DH who was refused alcohol by an old biddy in a supermarket she didnt think he looked old enough (he was 34 at the time)and unshaven wearing his uniform from work?? and to top it all he could hear their mosquito device outside the store to deter teenagers hanging around the lucky bugger

If that was the case she should have said so.

I would write a letter of complaint to ASDA and then phone your GP and ask for a prescription saying that you were happy to pay for the medicine but that you were refused it.

The paracetemol restriction seems stupid, but I have been told (by those who know such stuff) that it does actually cut liver damage, as people don't take as many, even though they could go from place to place. It might be because they aren't feeling suicidal and going out tablet shopping, they're keeping paracetemol in for headaches etc and then feeling suicidal and taking what's in the cupboard. If they have 32, they take 32. If they only have 12, they only take 12.

Buy tablets and they'll assume they are for you.

It was a great day when DS1 learnt to swallow tablets with no water, in the car, because I'd forgotten to give them at home

I would have asked for it on px but they take 48 hours to fill a px and needed it today but ill keep that in mind ty
