Does this count as queue jumping?

I have a pet hate, people who form one queue, when there obviously should be more, and then give you dirty looks when you ruin their 'hedge your bets' formation and create a second queue.

It isn't that I can't wait, it's just annoying when you have to extend the queue to the point that you're obstructing others from passing by. And when I've a heavy shopping basket in my hand, having folk squeeze past just gets ridiculous and sometimes rather painful?

yes it is! if there is one queue go to the back, starting your own queue is pushing in!

Think supermarket checkout, two cashiers backing each other. I expect two queues, one for each cashier, often you get one queue in the middle of both, but the queue has to start a bit further back, so anyone else coming can't quite tell which way they intend to go.

Hmm, I see what you mean about obstructing, but OTOH one queue for several tills is fairer, really, and usually faster for everybody.

It's normally the queues for baskets/fewer items that have the single line and the queue for trolleys that have two separate queues.

yes queue jumping I wouldn't give you a dirty look though, I would say " There is a queue can you join the back please!" It really annoys me.

Definitely queue jumping. I would have thought most people would say "excuse me, we're queueing in this line here". I'm surprised if the most you get is dirty looks!
I think it's just your opinion there should be two queues, I always like it if people have the sense to form one queue for the lot as it's much fairer, moves quicker, and saves one person getting stuck for hours behind someone who has a query.

I just ask the last person in the queue which till they're queueing for and sometimes they say both, so long as we're all using the same method should be fair. Agree though OP - tis a pain in the arse when queueing in one long line doesn't make efficient use of queueing space and you're getting shoved past all the time. I have been known to put my basket and kick it along if it's too heavy .

What really pisses me off is when a long queue ends up snaking down an aisle and you get people trying to cut in - most people get to where they think the end is and then with a face go and find the end - but you do get a few cheeky fuckers who find it's not the end of the queue and expect to stand there as if they're pulling out onto a main road in a line of traffic.

Definitely queue jumping. I see it all the time and it really fucks me off. The people at the front of the current queue should be moved to the front of a new queue.

I can see what you are saying, but yes, it is queue jumping. IMO it is the cashiers job to invite people from the 1st very long queue to make the second queue.

This confuses me at McDonalds. (Not that we go that often, I may have missed something)

At one branch there seems to be one central queue with everyone branching off to an individual till when available. At other branches, there are five or six individual queues. So where does this start? Who tells people there is one queue or many? It seems to be a new thing. I dont really like it as one large queue creates a problem with space

If by startong your 'new queue' you end up being served before those who were in the old queue, then you have jumped the queue haven't you. I'm sure if this were to happen you'd call them to come in front of you though wouldn't you op

I agree with the OP, especially if the further along cashier is yelling 'Next Please!' And everyone else just stares at her. I shrug my shoulders and go be next.

If there is no sign/ropes/what have you saying 'please form on queue' I always jump ahead to the other cashier if the queue is shorter.

I don't think this thread was ever likely to go the way you were hoping, OP.

It stands to reason that if you're looking at a queue of 10 people and thinking you should start another one, those 10 people disagree with your thinking and it's being replicated in this thread.

I think you need something more challenging to think about. Does it really matter in the great scheme of things?

In our local sandwich shop, there is a sign which says "please queue both sides" sometimes when i go in there is 5 or 6 people in 1 queue, so i go down the other side and get served, if people are daft enough to not read/ignore the signs then its not my problem. :o

I would probably be inclined to say something to you if you did that whilst I was queueing - surely it isn't too hard to do either seperate queues or a single queue depending on the method that in use when you arrive.
Next time you might try saying to the assembled queue that you intend to start a second queue and see how that goes down.

Talking of queue jumping, and sorry op I agree with everyone else- you are queue jumping. But, like Zelda, if there is a massive sign saying to queue both sides then I go down one side even if everyone else is queuing on the other side. Anyway, 2 days ago I was in Card Factory, where there is always a massive queue. I chose my cards and got in it. The woman behind me was called to the counter just after me so I heard when she said "I was holding the place for someone" and kept shouting another woman's name across the shop. Eventually the woman at the till said "I'll just serve someone else while you go and get her." Was it wrong of me to be thinking, tough luck lady she hasn't made it in time so she should go to the back?
