Does this count as queue jumping?

I have a pet hate, people who form one queue, when there obviously should be more, and then give you dirty looks when you ruin their 'hedge your bets' formation and create a second queue.

It isn't that I can't wait, it's just annoying when you have to extend the queue to the point that you're obstructing others from passing by. And when I've a heavy shopping basket in my hand, having folk squeeze past just gets ridiculous and sometimes rather painful?

i'm with you OP. i can't abide the britishness of queuing when there's no need. they do it in wetherspoons too. 4 bar tenders and one queue Hmm

i just go to the bar.

and in shelly's example... they're sheep! that's why they are queuing together. it's madness! madness i tell you!

TheMonster · 19/06/2011 10:24

YABU.
I got cross in a card shop yesterday when DS joined the end of the queue and two women just walked up and went in front of him.

one queue for multiple outlets mean that people just go to the next available one meaning that people queue for less time and it's a fair system

starting a new queue in this instance is very arrogant and rude

drivemecrazy63 · 19/06/2011 10:27

its very british??? well would be wouldnt it and yes its because we like fairness and are brought up to be polite its all part of being british and whats wrong with that....having said that i HATE those types of queues that are one and branch off to different tills its a stupid idea probably from france or somewhere else in the EU but were BRITISH and proud TYVM

Ealingkate · 19/06/2011 10:29

The one queue thing is just generally fairer, but if think you there's no need to do it BornSicky then good luck to you.

SpecialFriedRice · 19/06/2011 10:30

I'm not sure if you are being unreasonable, it would depend on the situation.

The only example I can think of is Greggs the bakers... When you walk in there is a clear sign saying queue both sides, but most people queue on one side, so I then get dirty looks when I walk in and get served straight away on the empty side. Not my fault they're all idiots and can't read.

If there is actually meant to be 2 lines but everyone is going in the same queue then YANBU to go to the front of the empty 2nd queue to get served. If however you are inventing a 2nd queue purely to get served quicker then YABU.

Yes, queue jumping.

Also really stupid when it's cashiers at a checkout - the reason there is one big queue is so they can open more tills/shut tills and no-one who's been waiting gets short-changed. In our local co-op they will tell you to go back to the end of the line if you do this, which is nice cos it means I don't have to!

mouseanon · 19/06/2011 10:33

The single queue in that situation is more efficient generally though. Saves on lots of people being held up by one slow person.

What annoyed me recently was a set of roadworks which had lots of large repeated signs saying "use both lanes" it did go down to one lane but the intention was clear that you should queue in both lanes then filter in at the end. It was also obvious why. When people queued in one lane it resulted in a huge line of traffic that went back to and around a major roundabout causing massive congestion on all the roads leading to it. Yet people still insisted on queueing in one lane. What's more if you used the other lane you would get beeped at, and people deliberately pulling out in front of you to stop you, ie they wouldn't drive on they'd just hold you up. If you made it to the end people wouldn't let you filter in. Madness!

drivemecrazy63 · 19/06/2011 10:39

thats just plain weird mouse ive seen that before too, in driving I try to be fair but your right your supposed to filter towards the end there are just some plain thick people driving on the roads unfortunately

BornSicky · 19/06/2011 10:46

the problem with a single queue for multiple outlets is that you're reliant on the sole person at the front being alert to the next available till. i've seen in one shop that they had a staff member at the front ushering people forward to the tills and telling people it's their turn, cos so many people get there and stare into space/chat to their partner etc.

however, if there's no clear system there, then i will just go to the front if there's a server waiting and no one's gone forward. i just want to pay for my stuff and go.
