Opened up a pack of frozen broccoli and took out some florets. Out fell a frozen SLUG.

AIBU to think that it is perfectly possible to remove slugs from veggies before freezing them, and that a failure to do so is sheer crapness on the manufacturer's part?

I had a beetle in my petits pois. I bagged up the little fucker and gave it back to Morrisons. As you can imagine, they were endlessly grateful.

ZombiePlan · 26/05/2011 18:04

Loving your work boobooglass! Grin

Do you think the Ocado man would give it a lift back???

OP posts:
BooBooGlass · 26/05/2011 18:07

It was from Ocado?? Shocking. I've vowed to go back to Birds Eye. The captain must have an ultra fine sieve, I've never had a stowaway in a bag of Birds Eye.

LordOfTheFlies · 26/05/2011 18:07

I had some fresh brocilli and after I'd steamed it I found a green caterpillar. If I'd found it before I'd just have removed it and carried on. But because I'd steamed the poor little thing to death I couldn't eat it. Gave it to DH! (the brochilli, not the caterpillar)Grin

SuePurblybilt · 26/05/2011 18:08

Free protein no?
Post it back.

honeybee007 · 26/05/2011 18:08

Maybe it's a free mystery gift and means you've won a prize?

It is grim though...and crappy manufacturer!

honeybee007 · 26/05/2011 18:09

Aww poor caterpillar....I hope you gave him a decent send off lord

Happymm · 26/05/2011 18:10

Grim is currently my favourite descriptive word! So no YANBU :o

Happymm · 26/05/2011 18:11

Has also become DD's favourite too-she's 6!

IprivateI · 26/05/2011 18:12

This is why you should wash everything before using - even frozen crap.

honeybee007 · 26/05/2011 18:14

Why is frozen broccoli crap?? I was under the impression it is as good and often better quality than fresh...

ZombiePlan · 26/05/2011 18:17

I thought frozen veggies were supposed to have more vitamins because they freeze them so quickly, rather than having them sit around slowly leaching the vits out. Am keen for the extra vits (but not the extra protein )

OP posts:
honeybee007 · 26/05/2011 18:19

That is also the impression I am under zombie, plus no food waste...except the free protein slug of course....although it is presumptuous of me to assume you would throw the protein out....you might compost it!

LaughingAunt · 26/05/2011 18:19

Harrods broccoli used to be full of slugs. Little baby ones, which were easy to miss.

I no longer live near Harrods, and buy my broccoli elsewhere, so it may no longer be the case.

heliumballoons · 26/05/2011 18:22

YANBU and agree thats 'grim'

I once found a spider in a bag of co-op lettace. I kno the staff well (local shop) and took bag bag complete with spider and x sai 'I take it you ant a refund - not another bag'!! I as actually expecting to be told it happens and wash it first. Grin

DorcasBouvier · 26/05/2011 18:23

Ugh, I think I have just gone off broccoli. I'll stick to green beans ~ nowhere for things to hide in those.

ZombiePlan · 26/05/2011 18:26

Shock at Harrods broccoli being full of slugs. You'd think it would be guaranteed slug-free at their prices...

smudgethepuppydog · 26/05/2011 18:28

I packaged up my rat dropping-like present from Bird's Eye peas and sent it back to them. Their customer service was crap. I had to get really snotty with them to refund me, I don't think I'll be buying from them again

ZombiePlan · 26/05/2011 18:29

Honeybee never fear, I am extremely environmentally conscious - I put it in the food waste recycling bag, which the council take away and turn into compost (I think)

TakeMeDrunkImHome · 26/05/2011 18:30

i had a snail in a bag of frozen spinach once. heated him up with a little butter, yum Grin

ChairOfTheBored · 26/05/2011 18:32

I don't mind the odd additional protein in my veggies, t'is nature.

But I really did object to the random 'meat lump' (a bone/gristle thing) that fell out of my tomato pasta sauce from Tesco once. To be fair, they took it off me while looking horrified, and gave me £5.

Bit of a result really, given the sauce have been less than a quid, and I'd eaten it anyway...

Punkatheart · 26/05/2011 18:32

That was not a slug you silly billy - it was a garlic-infused escargot. All the best places are doing them....

honeybee007 · 26/05/2011 18:32

zombie so glad the protein didn't die in vain and will go on to provide much needed nutrients in it's composted state......I will forever see a slug and think oh look free protein!

honeybee007 · 26/05/2011 18:34

I wonder why iprivatei hasn't come back to explain why frozen veg is crap?
