to know what a merkin is?

I was the only person in work who knows what a merkin is. Loads of females, big range of ages and not one single other person there who knew what I was on about.

NoDayButToday · 23/05/2011 20:18

sunshinelifeisgood · 23/05/2011 20:18

A hairless young harlot named Perkin
When asked why she favoured a merkin,
Replied in a trice
?It?s nice for the lice,
Who else would have nowhere to lurk in?

With thanks to wordorigins.org

They suggest spirit gum aka eyelash glue I believe.

NettoSuperstar · 23/05/2011 20:31

FourFingeredKitkat · 23/05/2011 20:34

sunshinelifeisgood · 23/05/2011 20:43

weblette · 23/05/2011 20:49

Aww - was going to link to the very wonderful Merkin World website where you could buy all sorts of designs but it appears not to exist any more :(

UrsulaBuffay · 23/05/2011 20:54

why though??? why? why?

WhoAteMySnickers · 23/05/2011 20:55

Yes I do know what a merkin is. Not to be confused with a Birkin, for example, if a friend updated their Facebook status saying they got a Birkin for their birthday you'd look pretty stupid commenting in said status thinking they meant a mirkin

cassierosse · 23/05/2011 20:57

I know what one is.

Just thankful I don't need one. Grin

thinks<

Although, if anyone is in need, could possibly donate ?! Blush

escapeartist · 23/05/2011 21:01

Strangely I had this discussion yesterday with my DH, and a male colleague, neither of whom knew... and both of them thought I was crazy/weird for knowing. My DH later told me that I came across as a sex-maniac. Thing is... I read about as part of my dissertation (which is on unrelated topic of Roman baths).
No wonder colleague kept looking at me strangely all day...

cannydoit · 23/05/2011 21:01

what a conikidink i used this very word on a thread earlier i think its a certain type of person that knows of a merkin.

DialsMavis · 23/05/2011 21:01

My Best friends cat is called Merkin; always goes down well at the vets

wigglesrock · 23/05/2011 21:03

I know what one is but am quite surprised that Mr W does too. Just asked him, and he does. To be honest I think I only know because it was in a comedy I watched and it took me about 10 mins to get what they were talking about, not sure about Mr W

escapeartist · 23/05/2011 21:03

Why? Because some STD's (syphilis for example) caused pubic hair to fall out, so prostitutes, back in the day, would use them to hide signs of disease.
I am sure there are more exciting and less gross reasons for why you would wear one in 2011...
