I was the only person in work who knows what a merkin is. Loads of females, big range of ages and not one single other person there who knew what I was on about.

That's actually satisfied a long term wonderment, thanks!

It's also the lesbian form of 'beard'.

I had two rats called beaver and merkin.

I knew a guy who's nickname was merkin Grin

I know what a Merkin is in the traditional sense. But I thought a merkin was also a Hollywood term for a woman married to a gay actor for example, to hide the fact he was gay. Or is that a beard and I'm mixed up?

In my first job many years ago, one of our frequently used reference books was called Principles of Insurance Law, written by the unfortunately named Professor Merkin.

A colleague always used to laugh hysterically at the sight of said book, and one day enlightened me as to what a merkin was.

Whenever the word has come up since, no-one else has known what it meant and everyone thought I was odd for knowing!

MarinaIvy · 23/05/2011 22:50

I thought I knew what a merkin was: Rory Bremner did an imprssion of Dubya, who always said "Mah feller Merkins".

I had a friend who was into all sorts of kink - he runs a fetish footware website, fer frick's sake! One day he showed up to an event with this 1" wide strip of facial hair down his chin.

I commented "nice Brazilian goatee". He didn't geddit.

Sigh

Strumpypumpy, you're right, the word is beard that you're thinking of :)

Kate Winslet had to wear a merkin for The Reader, something to do with historical accuracy I think.

A couple of forums I know, use it to refer to Americans as well. Mind you I'm not a good example, because I know so many weird things thanks to the internet

I only found out a few days ago.
