To tell DH that it really isn't funny?

A while ago DH got annoyed because we kept getting mail for the people who used to live here a year after we moved in so one day he saw the post man coming up the garden path, hid behind the door and when the letters started pushing through DH grabbed them really aggressively from the inside of the letter box screaming "GIVE THEM TO ME!" and then made chomping and snaring noises as if he was eating them. The postman jumped a mile and shouted "jesus christ" before backing out of the garden quickly.

So this time we bough found it funny and I was creased up for ages laughing. However he decided it would be funny to do it a tak-away leaflet guy, same proceedure but this time the young guy shouted "dickhead" and thumped the front door. I told DH enough was enough and to give it a rest and he didn't do it for ages but this morning he was in a daft mood and did it the paper boy and literally RAN out of the garden and down the street. I don't think he even finished his round. He was only about 13.

I'm really angry with him, as usual he's taken it too far. DH says if I don't like it I don't have to watch!! AIBU to insist he stops doing it as it just isn't funny anymore?

It was even funny the first time. What is he, 12?

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 21/05/2011 13:57

He sounds like a loon. How old is he? Ten?

EdwardorEricCantDecide · 21/05/2011 13:57

PMSL

QualiaQuale · 21/05/2011 13:57

It wasn't funny the first time. Are you married to a small child? Hmm

GhostInTheBackOfYourHead · 21/05/2011 13:57

youmeatsix · 21/05/2011 13:58

it made me laugh!

i dont have to live with it though

BimboNo5 · 21/05/2011 13:58

Uhhmm I dont get it? Whats getting mail for the previous owners got to do with anything?

YouBrokeIt · 21/05/2011 13:59

Oh no it was funny the first time, you should've seen the posties face Grin but 2nd and 3rd time - not so much.

TBF he did ask the postie to stop putting these letters through the door many times before he turned wierd on him.

I'm with the postman. Jesus Christ.

yikert · 21/05/2011 13:59

I don't know if its me but I found it quite funny

ChippingIn · 21/05/2011 13:59

So long as he didn't hurt anyone pulling their hand through the slot I think it's actually quite funny. I get a fright quite easily as I'm often miles away in my own thughts - but I always find it funny.

FetchezLaVache · 21/05/2011 14:01

There's no way in hell the postman's not going to put those letters through the door, AFAIK he would be breaking the Posties' Code of Postpersonship not to deliver a letter to the address on the envelope.

BimboNo5 · 21/05/2011 14:01

But you'd have received your own letters through the letterbox anyway?

ChippingIn · 21/05/2011 14:01

The postman isn't allowed to not put the letters through the door. I asked mine about it as the people only live up the road where she also delivers and she said although she knows that and would happily take them there instead she's not allowed to.

CravingExcitement · 21/05/2011 14:02

Did it stop you getting mail for the previous owners though?

peeriebear · 21/05/2011 14:02

It's not the posties job to sort out letters that may not be going to the right person, he just has to put them through the right door. Can you imagine how much extra work he'd have to do?? Added to the fact that posties change all the time; I rarely see the same one from one day to the next.

Bumfuzzle · 21/05/2011 14:02

No. It's not funny. He makes himself look like a total twat. And he runs the risk of really pissing someone off, what if they open the door and punch him? Or chuck a stone at the window? Or scratch the car? Might sound ott but some people can be like that. Or an angry parent banging on your door?

And - unlikely but possible - someone with a heart condition getting a huge shock? Like I say, very unlikely, but within the realms of possibility.

There's obviously more danger to him and to your property than there is danger of someone keeling over on your doorstep, of course, but it's still there.

Mind you, I personally see practical jokes of that nature as mildly sadistic. You get pleasure from upset/distress/fear/aggrivation/fright/etc of other people.

Not in the same league as pulling off their fingernails of course Grin but there's still, imo, something slightly - only slighlty - unsettling about someone who likes to scare people. You wonder why they like it.

AgentZigzag · 21/05/2011 14:03

I would say the first time was funny, it made me laugh, but yeah, if he's doing it all the time it'd get a bit wearing.

The mail for the previous owners just made her DH think about doing it bimbo, I think.

worraliberty · 21/05/2011 14:03

My DH often barks at the postman. The only one still amused by it is our dog Grin

YouBrokeIt · 21/05/2011 14:03

No we still get mail for previous owners! Luckily DH is usually at work when the postman comes!

First time was funny, I'm giggling away like a childish teenager and have a stupid sense of humour anyway. Is a bit tight to keep doing it, especially to a young kid. What would you do if paperboy told his built like a brick shithouse dad who decides to come round and rip your DH's ears off have a word?

Punkatheart · 21/05/2011 14:04

Not funny. Imagine if lots of people did that to a postman. OK you were having a joke but how does the postie know you are not psychotic or dangerous?

Sorry - but it just shows a lack of respect for people doing a job. Jokes on friends are fine but this - just extraordinarily childish.

Also be careful. Someone might actually hit him next time.

MillyR · 21/05/2011 14:05

It can be funny to play a slightly frightening joke on someone known to you.

It isn't funny to do it to a stranger.

It is really horrible to frighten a child if you are a stranger and an adult. In fact if the child reports it, you could end up with the police wanting an explanation, because the child has no idea that someone shouting and grabbing is simply playing a 'hilarious' joke.

OberonTheHopeful · 21/05/2011 14:07

The post office are under an obligation to deliver mail as addressed. I've had the same problem before and the easiest way to solve it is to write "not known at this address" on the letters and put them back in the post. They'll stop after a while.

richandlazy · 21/05/2011 14:08

You both sound like a pair of twats. Well suited to each other I'd say.

'Also be careful. Someone might actually hit him next time.'

Let's hope so.
