To feel sad that none of ds's stuff gets displayed in class?

He's nearly five and in reception. Not one of his things has been displayed in class so far. He has special needs and can't draw or write anything recognisable, but he enjoys the scribbling/Mark-making that he does and I just think they could just once put one of his pieces up?

I think it would make a huge difference to his self-esteem. A quiet word with the teacher is needed - but what a shame you have to spell it out. Hope you get some joy.

Also they had class assembly today and there was no attempt to give him a part in it, when the vast majoritybof the other children all got to do something. It would be difficult for him to say something but they could get him to hold up a picture or something couldn't they, even with the TAs help?

Your poor DS. That is so sad. You should certainly go and talk to the teacher, perhaps make some more suggestions of how he could join in. Perhaps s/he has just been thoughtless - I hope this is the case, rather than your DS having been deliberately excluded.

School/teacher needs a rocket up their bum. This is their job after all, they should have all this basic stuff covered.

Aw emkana. That is so not on. My 5yo DS's drawing/colouring is well behind others in the class and often just scribbles. But he really tries, and enjoys it and they put it up with the rest - they also often do quite directed art activities eg pics of flowers made of scrunched up paper - so they can all do it to some extent. There's no need for him to be the only one left out. If it's really being done deliberately, could it be that they somehow (very misguidedly) mean well? Anyway you need to talk to them.

YANBU. DS2 has had 'Work of the Week' for matching colours (he's 8 and in a mainstream class some of the time) and when they do sharing assemblies he gets to hold something up (that's if he facing in the right direction Smile) I would have a word - it may be that they just don't realise. I do think reception classes are usually large and very busy - is he in one of those double classes where they all mix together? If so, you'll probably find the teacher in Year 1 will get to know him better.

I would have a word with the Teacher. Are you absolutely sure none of his work has ever been displayed? I'm just wondering because I only go into my son's class on parents evening and that's only twice a year...yet the wall displays change all the time.

Not sure about the assembly, some kids really can't take the pressure but you know your own child.

Sorry moaning some more. The other day ds for the first time ever drew something vaguely recognisable under guidance - a really big thing for him. Yet I only found out when the ed psych mentioned it to me. Why couldn't the teacher mention it when I picked ds up?

Doesn't teacher training include basic psychology these days? Surely they know about child motivation and well being?

He doesn't get one to one but he is on School Action plus. I am in the school all the time because I'm on the PTA and a governor, but I have never seen ds's work displayed. I know that teachers are very busy and I certainly don't expect daily or weekly reports, but when he did something that was a really really big thing for him?

Bluddymofo - surely they can make sure that each person in the class is publically acknowledged for what they've done by rotating classwork displays. It could even be done in class register order if the teacher is too knackered to be more imaginative. If it is really so difficult, for 30 kids in a class the teacher only has to change the displays about 3 times a term - 10 children's work on display at a time. It can't be that difficult.

But how many times does being a Governor bring you into your own child's class? I've been a Governor for years now but that just means I'm in school a fair bit...not my child's class necessarily.

I do go into his class quite a lot, just to have a look - often when nobody'/s around, when I'm setting up for PTA stuff for example.

I wouldn't go in all guns blazing mind.

emkana I would definitely have a little word with the teacher, my dd has the same sort of problem, she is 4 (social communication, and speech and language difficulties) and if there is anything that I am not happy at preschool I do take the teacher aside for a little chat. Just not on tbh.
