to eat carbs?

I don't get the whole low carb thing. I would be lost without breakfast cereal, bread, and pasta etc. I eat plenty of the stuff. Breakfast is 2 or 3 weetabix, big baked potato and a bar of choc for lunch, pasta or summat like that for tea and perhaps more chocolate in the evening. Oh and sugar in my coffee. I am a size 10, 8 on a good day.

If I ever want to lose a few pounds (after the kids for example or an indulgent holiday, I cut down and count the calories. But NEVER cut out carbs. I love carbs.

Is it just me? I can't be the only one still eating carbs can I?

I am. I can't bear to live without them. You can actually lose weight by just counting calories but nobody seems to believe that anymore Hmm

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2011 23:31

Are you being unreasonable to eat carbs? Hmm

Don't be ridiculous.

if you want to say that you think low-carb diets are stupid, say that and have a proper fight.

If you want to say that you are a ridiculous person who takes everything they read in celebrity magazine literally and thinks that everyone obeys diet fads, you've pretty much done it.

Of course you're not the only one eating carbs. The people cutting out or cutting down on carbs are a minority. The majority of people with healthy or unhealthy diets eat plenty of carbohydrate.

Hardhatonamission · 12/05/2011 23:31

I love carbs but am allergic to wheat so my carbs are limited to my favourite foodstuff in the whole world - potatoes. Hard life!

purplepidjin · 12/05/2011 23:32

I eat carbs too. Wholemeal bread, potatoes, pasta

The whole thing is aimed at those who think a Nice biscuit is healthy because it doesn't have chocolate on. My Mum has had a lot of success with Atkins (it just makes me feel dizzy and sick) and, in the book, your "carb" intake is quite a complicated calculation involving fibre, sugar, saturated fat etc.

No one gets healthy eating fried eggs and bacon, just as no one gets healthy eating only cabbage soup. But cutting out the biscuits, chocolate, crisps etc boo hiss and doing more exercise has to be a good thing?

Nancy66 · 12/05/2011 23:33

I try and avoid wheat - but I do eat rice and potatoes.

Op you may be thin but your diet is very unhealthy

droopyxmastree · 12/05/2011 23:37

Why is it unhealthy? I still eat vegetables etc I was just stressing the carb bit. What is wrong with it otherwise?

hmc · 12/05/2011 23:41

I eat carbs as in potatoes, bananas and other fruit, wholewheat bread, rice, oats and pasta - but in smallish portions.

If I ate white bread, white rice, cakes, cereal etc etc I would be the size of an oil tanker - hang on, wait a minute - a few months ago I was that oil tanker until I overhauled my diet and dropped 50lbs.

I also no longer have several energy dips per day as my blood sugar drops massively after a sugar rush. When eating too many carbs I often had to fight the impulse for a day time nap!

LoveLeonardCohen · 12/05/2011 23:42

Well you are lucky OP that you manage to stay so slim with a diet like that! Some of us are not so lucky. I do love carbs and couldn't manage without them, but eat carbs that release sugar slowly; brown rice, porridge etc And I love a bit of dark chocolate also. I definately need carbs

droopyxmastree · 12/05/2011 23:48

But carbs fill me up! When I've eaten a good doorstep of bread with Philly or something, or a big jacket potato, I don't get hungry again for hours. Then when I do get hungry, yes, I may grab a snickers. But again, that will fill me up enough until the next decent (carb based) meal. Carbs are good fuel and bloody everyone is down on them it seems. Even my 79 year old mum is steering clear..

FreudianSlipper · 12/05/2011 23:50

i used to be able to eat what i wanted, and it was lots of crap and would jsut cut down on junk for a few days if i put on a bit of weight then i became ill, since then my metabolism has changed

for me eating low carb works, i do not need to eat as much. i follow a very similar diet to my dad he is diabetic type 2 (as is all my aunts and my nan was on his side) so i am concerned about having too much sugar in my diet

i do not follow any diet strictly, i do have chocolate though (not every day like i used too) and the odd high carb meal

i feel much better for it and have more energy

hmc · 12/05/2011 23:50

Your a medical marvel droopy - tbh your diet sounds crap (chocolate every day if not twice per day). No offence mate!

LoveLeonardCohen · 12/05/2011 23:52

Nothing wrong with carbs but carbs that release sugar into bloodstream slowly and steadily are better for your health

AgentZigzag · 12/05/2011 23:52

I couldn't or wouldn't want to live without carbs.

Or the butter I put on the majority of them Smile

Hot

Buttered

Toast

hmc · 12/05/2011 23:54

That link is not specifically about carbs - but it exhorts even slim peeps like you to follow a good diet and exercise

HerbWoman · 13/05/2011 00:18

Agree with Freudian - I've cut out most carbs, and have found that I need to snack less, and really don't even fancy stuff like biscuits any more. Have much more energy and sleep better.

bleedingstill · 13/05/2011 00:21

hmc please tell me more about your weight loss, particularly how you motivated ourself.
thank you

theinet · 13/05/2011 00:48

carbs are ESSENTIAL in your diet to provide you with the fuel you need to function.

You just shouldnt eat too many refined carbs. that's all. a balanced diet with lean protein carbs and a little fat is what you need.

as you get into your 30s and 40s, your body needs less food, and you will start to gain weight unless you keep your intake under control, even with exercise. things that people think are healthy, like breakfast cereals, often aren't. keep your foods unrefined and unadulterated and you should be ok.

carbs are fine. it is just easy to overdo it with pasta, white rice, potatoes. but every diet should include carbs in moderation.

ChuckYouFarlie · 13/05/2011 01:06

YABU carbs are satan's spawn

Spurn them I tell ye, SPURN them.

I haven't eaten a carb that doesn't have alcohol in it for three months and I am now thin and gorgeous.

Well maybe not gorgeous, but thinnish.

PumpkinSnatch · 13/05/2011 01:14

YANBU. A healthy diet consists of 3 healthy carb based meals plus snacks. If you wanted your diet to be perfect you could cut out the chocolate and include 5 portions of fruit and veg but the carbs are fine.

spiderslegs · 13/05/2011 01:56

ZigZagit is a fact rarely universally acknowledged that butter is an essential food-group.

We eat at least a lb a week.

Marge is for fatties.

lljkk · 13/05/2011 06:13

My dad has been diagnosed as pre-diabetic and the main thing he has to do is cut out carbs -- he's pretty nervous about the diagnosis, I have never seen him be so conscientious about a health matter in his life!. He is overweight but only by about 10-15%, not massively so. So I am trying to cut down a bit on carbs, too.

I do think most people eat way too much wheat and not enough veg (you didn't mention any fruit or veg, OP).

Tee2072 · 13/05/2011 06:30

iijkk who told your dad to cut out carbs?! You need carbs, good carbs, even if you're diabetic. I have been told by more than one HCP, BTW, that there is no such thing as pre-diabetic. He either is or he isn't. What they mean is he needs to lose weight to be healthy.

I am diabetic with excellent control and I eat carbs.

Carbs are brain food.

No healthy diet cuts out one food group. All things in moderation and eat good carbs.

jeckadeck · 13/05/2011 07:19

I totally agree. My pet hate at the moment is people who smugly bang on about having cut out carbs. Eurgh. The thing that particularly gets my goat is when people pretend to have a food intolerance to carbs as an excuse for anorexic behaviour. If you want to lose weight by making your life miserable giving up bread and pasta come out and say it rather than pretending you have some obscure and trendy disease. FFS.

Al0uiseG · 13/05/2011 07:26

Carbs are the actual devil. If I have a weekend where I eat bread, rice, potatoes, I gain 7lbs by Monday morning. It also makes my stomach stick out and I look 5 months pregnant, my shit stinks and I have wind like you wouldn't believe. Dropping processed carbs is the best thing I ever did for my body.
