I have heard a lot recently about the rastamouse programme being racist and some people are worried about their little one learning slang
I dont know if I should let DD watch it?
What does everyone think?

I dont allow it simply because a) it annoys me and b) he doesn't watch tv when it's on anyway!

Well, the title Rastamouse would ring bells for me... Watch some on youtube or whatever first and see what you think. I haven't seen it. Yet!

My DD loves it. I don't think it's racist. I think it's good to have characters on TV representing lots of different communities.

I don't know what the content is, but when my kids watch CBeebies, they don't take any notice of this programme and wait for it to be over so they can watch something they enjoy. I wouldn't worry about it.

It's a cartoon about mice from jamaica. Not baby crack. They speak better than the fricking waybuloo critters. It's on the BBC - how bad do you think it could be?

I love it, and DD loves it. Some really good music and nice to get a different cultural perspective. Plus, far better language than so many ridiculous kids programmes (Waybuloo, Teletubbies, ITNG etc...)
Also, always has a nice moral storyline and emphasises helping people (mice). What's not to like?

My kids love it. I'm bemused to hear it described as racist. Is that because the mice do not speak like those of Aryan descent?

I think people are suggesting they are making cariacatures of jamaicans. Or something.

Nothing could be worse than the hideous Waybaloo, they don't speak properly and the story boards are so poor it is ridiculous.

My DD sometimes watches it (Rastamouse), she sometimes struggles with what they're saying, but I think that's important, that she understands there are different accents / cultures etc. Anyone who automatically assumes there are links between drugs etc. are seeing it through adult eyes, rather than a child's innocence.

Christ on a bike, who would ever think the programme is racist?! I'm half West Indian and I'm in no way offended, nobody I know is offended. They speak better English than the Teletubbies and Waybuloo. It's some crime fighting mice that love cheese and playing reggae, that's it. There's a better message in Rastamouse than in most older Disney movies, many of which are sexist (girls always helpless) and racist (darker characters = evil, lighter characters = good) imho. Tom and Jerry was properly racist with the fat mammy character...

They're clearly not going to show kids how to roll joints on Cbeebies!

Rastamouse is ace. And not even vaguely racist. All the mice are different colours, they have jamaican accents. I think only one of them is Rastafarian (Rastamouse) and he's the smartest mouse, tho the girl mouse is quite smart too.

Well said Clarence - it's a fab programme. Jamaican mice speaking Jamaican - how can it be racist? Is Balamory racist? all those Scottish people talking with Scottish accents? Read the books - they are brilliant too

I like it. Sadly, DS not so much.

I have only seen it once when round my SIL and thought it was great as does she. Her OH is West Indian as are many of her and my friends and none of them think it is racist at all. In fact they think that it is really good that their kids get to see part of their own culture on telly.

I quite like it think its cool (much better than rubbish way bloody balu) my dd age 5 however thinks its for babies so doesn't want to watch it!!!

or is the real reason your worried because its a black cartoon you automatically feel its something bad or neagtive if not then you really have to expain why you are not worried about all the other shows

Rastafarianism is a religion....I like Rastamouse...it's fun. But imagine if I wrote a script for "Nunfox" or "Rabbi-Rabbit" Bit weird.

Maybe Ratamouse got through because the accent is cool and so are the hats.

Rastamouse was written by a Rastafarian though wasn't it? I think Levi Roots objects to Rastafarians being depicted as mice - there will always be disagreements of this kind within communities.

Well if a Nun wrote something about a detective-Nun-mouse then someone would moan, guaranteed. It's fun to watch and what's wrong with mice anyway? We're not talking pigs here are we?
