I have heard a lot recently about the rastamouse programme being racist and some people are worried about their little one learning slang
I dont know if I should let DD watch it? Confused
What does everyone think?
Hmm

Won't somebody think of them poor lickle orphans?

I am more concerned at who was looking after the orphans before the crime spree hit Rastamouse Town than it being potentially racist tbh. Thanks to Rastamouse and the EZ Crew, the orphans now have someone looking after them, a cook and a swimming instructor. How did they manage before people started committing crimes and Rastamouse made them do community service to 'make a bad ting good'?

Counterstrike · 11/05/2011 20:43

Hmm.. would you rather your child learnt 'teletubbie' and 'waybuloo language?
Nothing wrong with waagwarrn. How the fuck is it slang anyway it's jamaicas language

RitaMorgan · 11/05/2011 20:52

If your child is learning to speak from CBeebies they are watching far too much TV anyway!

Itsjustafleshwound · 11/05/2011 20:56

i am more offendeed by the patronising twats presenters than rastamouse

Maybeitsbecause · 11/05/2011 20:56

Oh get a life. It's a harmless CBeebies cartoon.

Itsjustafleshwound · 11/05/2011 20:56

offended not offendeed

sungirltan · 11/05/2011 20:58

i think its ok. my barbadian friend thinks its racict because they speak in patois and he finds this offensive.

BoyMeetsWorld · 16/06/2011 21:26

haha amazing - I did a search on here to see if any other Mumsnetters had been mildly perplexed by Rastamouse and, lo & behold, there are a ton of threads about the wee Jamaican rodent :p

I particularly like the comment by the poster who says 'I like it...LO sadly not so much'. This rings true with us...we recorded the whole series, quite excitedly as my hubby's stepdad is Jamaican & I knew he'd love it. LO couldn't care less - we were much more into it than he was!!!

I have to say though (& now I'm seriously questioning whether this in fact makes me racist????!!!) I was worried about the language implications. If my small weedy white child starts strolling around shouting waaa g'waan at people (particularly his big burly Jamaican step-grandpappy) I would be pretty embarassed. Not least as little white son is the LEAST appropriate child imaginable to be giving it laid back swagger. Rastamouse, he aint.

wearenotinkansas · 16/06/2011 21:56

Don't get the concern over this. I love Rastamouse Blush as does DD! Really think the language concerns are odd. It's, what, 5 mins of TV maybe a couple of times of week? Can't be that influential surely.

suebfg · 16/06/2011 21:59

I don't think it's racist but it is a bit crap

LDNmummy · 16/06/2011 22:01

Ah you just reminded me of a thread I have to go back to as I was having a very heated debate over this subject. I think it is not a good programme.

Here is the link if you wanna check it out, though many do not agree with me. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/1237454-AIBU-to-think-Rastamouse-is-mildly-offensive

cazzybabs · 16/06/2011 22:05

me and the dds love it

messymammy · 16/06/2011 22:07

ooh I love little Rastamouse! Dd thinks he's called rustymouse-very cute her decifering their accents.
TBH I've far more of a problem with stupid Jaker's Piggly, makes all "Oirish" sound like oiks (we're not obviously!).

osd · 16/06/2011 22:36

Just to add my aunt thinks in the night garden is racist and she is a nursery lunchtime person and helper, mind her children are grown up.

Her argument was that maka paki wasn't the right think to tell children. I got annoyed and said the characters name was maka paka and it was a lovely program she still insisted as it could be construed that way and used as a racist taunt. I gave up.

Just had a similar discussion about rastamouse at my grandmas when my dc's were watching it the other day.

Her argument stripped down. 'This is silly what is irie (sorry spelling) what is that teaching children' my dd 4yo 'he's happy', my aunt 'how do you know that' dd 'because thats what he said' my aunt 'speaking like that is racist as you are not from there' my dd 'i am not talking like that i am just watching it and it's easy to know what it means if you watch it' my aunt 'well it is still racist to use words that aren't yours, it makes people feel different'

I was very confused by my aunt as surely this program is about making things unfamiliar familiar. Making people understand each other and to show that although we are different our morals and goals are the same.

I later, out of aunts earshot told dd to ignore my aunt. I was also amazed dd had gotten the grasp of the program, i actually didn't realise irie meant no worries (thanks urban dictionary) until i looked it up to confirm dds beliefs and my dd had grasped that just from watching it. Also we are rural northern so she must have got the gist of the language from the storyline. I think its great.
