Where do these massive salaries exist?

I've been reading the "Are you Rich?" thread on here and some people seem to have very high salaries indeed. Apprentice candidates each year on the programme are already on salaries of 100k plus before being on the show. Plenty of people seem well off and have houses and cars that mean they are obviously not earning the minimum wage.

I do not know anyone locally (east anglia) that earns more than about £20,000 per year. There are no jobs around here that pay anymore than that. And the ones that I know earning 20k or so are teachers and nurses. Nothing is ever advertised in my area with a higher salary than that.

Where are all these 100k+ jobs?

well in east anglia they certainly exist for some folk in cambridge

skaen · 04/05/2011 16:12

Chief execs and senior officers of local authorities / NHS trusts. Some doctors. Lawyers and accountants can earn loads depending on area of specialism and nature of firm. These sorts of jobs are advertised in national press and specialist 'trade' publications e.g. law society gazette, not the local press.

But there must be people earning higher salaries in other areas of the country other than city (london) Wink

There are lots of big houses in the area in which I live, lots of people with nice expensive cars.

Commerical lawyers.

Insomnia11 · 04/05/2011 16:13

Company directors.

crazygracieuk · 04/05/2011 16:14

Megabucks jobs won't be advertised in the same places as nurse/teacher jobs. The ads that I have seen have been with industry specific recruitment agents, linked in and in broadsheet newspapers like The Times. I suspect that people in your area with megabucks commute to London and have their holiday home in East Anglia or are self employed.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 04/05/2011 16:14

city (London)

People who move out of London having cashed in the equity in the house in London they just about managed to afford. They take up most of the really lovely houses round here (Oxon).

teenidentity · 04/05/2011 16:15

Have namechanged.

DH earns £180-200k pa as a senior executive in a pharmaceutical company. There are thousands if not tens of thousands of people in the South East who earn that sort of money.

FreudianSlipper · 04/05/2011 16:17

there are high earners everywhere in senior positions and of course some areas pay more than others. not sure these positions are advertised that heavily as often candidates will be head hunted for positions like this

crazygracieuk · 04/05/2011 16:17

M4 corridor will also have 100k+ jobs

lubberlich · 04/05/2011 16:17

IT - computery stuff - I don't know what. My cousin does it on a consultancy basis and gets paid an obscene amount.

Barristers/lawyers, property developers, top medics including GPs ..... all stinking rich.

RunforFun · 04/05/2011 16:18

London is not the only city y'know.

Plenty of Northern cities pay that sort of salaries too.

lurkerspeaks · 04/05/2011 16:20

100K p.a. is not stinking rich...

DooinMeCleanin · 04/05/2011 16:21

My Aunt works in Leeds as a marketing executive. Her start off salary was over £40k, that was 12 years and many promotions ago, so she must be on much, much more now.

FreudianSlipper · 04/05/2011 16:21

i wasn't suggesting it was. but the salaries in the city are way above the national average for everyone from pa's, it helpdesk staff to md's

GetOrfMoiCase · 04/05/2011 16:22

I know this sounds mad, but 100K salaries are not that much now.

Plenty of quite mediocre jobs pay 100 grand, not just London either. My boss ibn my old job was on that (more than if you counted car allowance and bonus and share schemes). He was a VP in Gloucester.

lubberlich · 04/05/2011 16:23

100K p.a. is not stinking rich...

It is for me.

indulged · 04/05/2011 16:24

I have a friend who is an NHS director and she doesnt get that much

peppapighastakenovermylife · 04/05/2011 16:25

Often those types of post are not advertised - people advance into them or get headhunted.

Surely there must be people in East Anglia earning more than 20k? Confused

Whelk · 04/05/2011 16:27

Of course £100K is rich! Stinking or otherwise Wink

crazygracieuk · 04/05/2011 16:27

My mil, sil and bil earn more than 20k and live in East Anglia. I've seen jobs in Cambridge fir more than 20k.
