to not tip the supermarket delivery driver?

MardyBra · 03/05/2011 19:41

Just wondered...

A friend told me earlier that she tips the Tesco delivery man.

I have never tipped a supermarket delivery person. Am I a mean cow?

However, I do tip the bloke who delivers the Chinese takeaway.

And my hairdresser.

Oh and waiters (if the service is good) and taxi drivers (as long as they don't spout drivel).

blimey i would never even think of tipping him. does she tip the parcel force man?

BlingLoving · 03/05/2011 19:42

Blimey. Never occurred to me to tip driver. And don't get any sense they expect it

emsyj · 03/05/2011 19:43

I don't tip the Ocado man and I don't know anyone who does.

I do tip the pizza guy and the hairdresser.

MardyBra · 03/05/2011 19:43

Lots of blimeys going on. Is Dick Van Dyke now a MN member.

I don't tip either, and they are LOVELY!

chirpchirp · 03/05/2011 19:44

I might consider it if I lived in a top floor flat and there was no lift, but otherwise no, YANBU.

It never occurred to me to tip the Tesco man. Especially not today, when he was half and hour late!

But I do tip waiters and hairdressers, etc/

MardyBra · 03/05/2011 19:45

so my friend is a loon...?

It would not occur to me to tip a supermarket delivery driver anymore than it would to tip the cashier if I was shopping in the supermarket itself. If I feel a staff member has gone beyond the normal service, I contact their manager and recommend them for a customer service award. Working in retail myself, I know that I appreciate a heartfelt recommendation from a customer more than the financial reward I may get from it.

Bluetinkerbell · 03/05/2011 19:47

never ever crossed my mind in tipping the delivery man/woman...
but then again I come from a country where it is not really a custom to tip.

5GoMadOnAZ650 · 03/05/2011 19:47

I've never tipped the grocery delivery man, the delivery costs enough as it is. It's never occurred for me to tip them but it could explain the hesitancy before they leave Blush

lubberlich · 03/05/2011 19:48

Nah - you wouldn't tip the Parcel Force man would you?
I hate tipping fullstop - my last trip to the hairdresser cost nearly £60 and I was supposed to cough up an extra 10%? Forget it. I gave the hair washy girl a couple of quid though. And I'll always tip a good waiter/ess but I HATE the obligation to tip. Especially rip off taxis.

MumInBeds · 03/05/2011 19:54

I'm sure last time I saw this discussed (possibly elsewhere) someone who's husband was a Tesco driver said it was a sackable offence to accept a tip.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 03/05/2011 19:54

My friend drives for Ocado and has never been tipped.

Punkatheart · 03/05/2011 19:56

I did try to tip the Waitrose man once - out of awkwardness really. 'No madam,' he said. 'We are not allowed.'

MardyBra · 03/05/2011 19:56

Yeeeeah - for once in my life, I'm not being a mardy unreasonable cow!

I sometimes tip them but then I am very used to it culturally. I told DP to do it last time because I was out and he gave him 4 pounds... I would not go that far Shock

I tried to tip the parcel people too as they bring huge packages for me sometimes that weigh a lot but the guy told me to not be silly and disappeared Blush

PregolaLola · 03/05/2011 20:01

never thought of it.
wouldnt though thats there job, i dont tip anyone for doing there job, if i felt they had done more than that job then yes i suppose i might.maybe. if they were really special.and unpacked everything.and put it away

Never occurred to me to tip the supermarket delivery man. Recently broke down on the motorway and was speedily rescued by the AA man. I did give him a tip, and he was so pleased.

eclipse · 03/05/2011 20:03

I always tip ocado/tesco delivery men/women and no one's yet refused. But I tend to tip everyone who's saved me a bit of effort and shopping is definitely right up there. Not entirely altruistic though because when I first did it I thought they'd like it and come to me first so my waiting-in time would be reduced. Never got the same person twice though but it was a bit of a habit by then.

idratherbeboarding · 03/05/2011 20:03

Often tip the Ocado delivery driver - they work really hard and the job is physically tough, and they don't earn much, and they are always really grateful. I tip hairdresser, hair washer, taxi driver, waiters/waitresses and if I've had a good experience, I include a tip when I check out at a hotel.

U/stand that some people don't believe in tipping, but personally, I can afford to do it and if I'm happy with a service provided, I'm more than happy to tip accordingly. On a more self serving note, a friend of mine who is a hair dresser told me that she always goes that bit further to make herself available to her regular tippers when her schedule may otherwise be full up.

Casey76 · 03/05/2011 20:07

I am never sure who your meant to tip so I don't tip anyone.....I would never even have thought of tipping a delivary driver though..
