to have sent a moderately famous person...

... a friend request on Facebook? We were close friends as late teens/early twenties, and I haven't seen him since my son (10) was about two. He popped up on my FB thing as has just made friends with a mutual friend.

Thought I'd like to see what he was up to away from the telly stuff - but will I look weird/star struck?

Didn't occur to me til after I sent request!

I think that is fine. He wouldn't be on facebook if he didn't want friends. Equally don't take it personally if he doesn't accept - not everyone wants to reconnect with very old friends.

depending on level of fame these facebook pages can be like fan sites so may not be his personal account iyswim may just be used for pr etc and not day to day stuff

No - it's not his fan page ( he has one) it's his personal page. Feel a bit embarrassed to have sent request really, as I haven't seen him for about eight years and we last talked on the phone about 4 years ago!

my dd has a semi famous person on HER friends list too!! i darent send a request cos i dont know him but she does

this chap is someone I knew very well from about 16 to 25 and he has since appeared on television quite a lot but is not a major league celeb! I honestly just wanted to say "Hi!" . But he has a certain level of fame, and I don't want it to look like I got in touch because of that!

Im friends with Jim Kerr on his personal page (Simple Minds singer), Ive loved them for donkeys years and although have only met him briefly I assume he has lots of just normal fans as friends judging by his page. Apart from the fact hes famous he is brilliant on FB and is always posting news articles that gets everyone talking, he frequently contributes to the conversations and its great to see such interactions. So I would say - go for it. Grin

I went to school ( as far as you can at single sex "brother/sister" schools )with this chap, and we remained friends until we both moved away from Startford. About 8 years ago.
