To think this is a legitimate scrabble move?

dh says not and called me a 'cheating scrabble whore'! Just because I beat him as usual!

Basically, the word 'tale' was already placed horizontally so vertically I placed the word 'best' making 'tale' into 'tales' and as best was on a triple word score I got 32 points!

Is this a legitimate move or was ibu to Place it?

What does he think is wrong about it? Without seeing the board I can't tell if you have scored correctly, but in terms of word placement, you've done nothing wrong.

purplepidjin · 01/05/2011 07:34

It lets you do that on the facebook app Confused

PS DP has played me once - and only once because I beat him. He's the one with a degree in English Hmm

RustyBear · 01/05/2011 07:35

Of course it's legitimate - it's the whole essence of Scrabble, changing an already placed word. You do know you get the score for 'tales' as well as 'best' don't you? As long as the letters you put down are all in one word, there's no problem - if you're clever you can change more than one original word in the same move and score for all of them.

auburnlizzy78 · 01/05/2011 07:41

Second RustyBear's comments. Your DH is totally wrong!

mummytime · 01/05/2011 07:42

Does your DH have any idea of the rules of scrabble? Because as you've described it, it is just playing the game. I thought you had done something clever, like when you lay a word next to an existing word and make a whole load of new words.

bellavita · 01/05/2011 07:43

Of course it is legitimate! You need to be maximising your score the best way you can. He would hate to play me. Is this his first game of scrabble?

Tell him to read the fecking rules!

ENormaSnob · 01/05/2011 07:43

I think it is legal but didn't think you got the points for tales as you have only made it a plural iyswim.

2cats2many · 01/05/2011 07:43

Completely legitimate.

Your husband is behaving like a scrabble novice.

FreudianSlipOnACrown · 01/05/2011 07:44

Changing the word is indeed one of the key ideas in scrabble.

Although isn't it in the rules that you aren't allowed plurals? Or am i imagining that? (we don't use the full rules)

JenniL1977 · 01/05/2011 07:46

Totally fine. Rib your DH for being a sore loser. Scrabble is a numbers game, not a word game!

Tee2072 · 01/05/2011 07:49

Absolutely legitimate and you get the points for both words.

Has he read the rules?

You can also lay tiles alongside an existing word to make several words, IYSWIM.

bellavita · 01/05/2011 07:50

How does he think the game is supposed to be played?

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/05/2011 07:51

You only get the triple for the tales if the s was on the triple.

PatientGriselda · 01/05/2011 07:52

Well it might be something like OP has tripled her entire score, rather than just the scored for "best", in which case her DH would be right that she was wrong.

winnybella · 01/05/2011 07:52

What MrsTerry says. Which letter was on triple word?

PatientGriselda · 01/05/2011 07:53

Cross post with mrsTP!

mollycuddles · 01/05/2011 07:54

We played scrabble a lot when we first got married and dh usually won. I then bought a book on scrabble tips and now I'm better than him. This led to lots of fights. We don't play now.

Yanbu

Although you should have tried to keep the s for a 7 letter word opportunity and you'd get 50 bonus points. Imagine what he'd call you then !

;D

Atwaroverscrabble · 01/05/2011 07:56

Thank you everyone! The triple word score was beneath the 't' of 'best'!

I will show dh this thread and await his grovelling apology!

OP posts:
PatientGriselda · 01/05/2011 07:57

And you only tripled the score for "best", right?

winnybella · 01/05/2011 07:58

But for tales you would get only 5 points (as an already existing word any double letter etc wouldn't count) and for best- 6x3=18 so 23 total Confused

Unless there were double letters etc in 'best'?

Atwaroverscrabble · 01/05/2011 07:58

Yes only for 'best'....

OP posts:
MrsTerryPratchett · 01/05/2011 07:59

I don't get 32. Best is 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 x 3 = 18 + 5 for tales = 23.

winnybella · 01/05/2011 08:00

Exactly, MrsTerry

MrsTerryPratchett · 01/05/2011 08:00

Oops, now I'm x-posting!

Maiasaurus · 01/05/2011 08:05

Wouldn't the B be on a double letter square?

Making it 9 x 3 = 27 plus 5 = 32
