to think Cesar is a dog's name?

My neighbours have a boxer dog, and a small black-and-white cat who shits in my garden is a regular visitor to my patio. Now and then I've heard the father calling out 'Cesar! Cesar!' in the back garden.

I always assumed he was calling the dog.

Then the other day his kid popped up at the back window and told me that Cesar is the cat.

AIBU to think this is deeply wrong ? I mean, I had a big black bruiser cat whose nickname was Brutus, but isn't Cesar a dog's name????

????

???

Not if you're an Ancient Roman...

bubblecoral · 20/04/2011 15:24

I have friends whose surname is Caesar.

And my dog has the same name as another friends baby.

manticlimactic · 20/04/2011 15:24

I thought you were going to say it was the kids name haha! Now that would have been funny. Grin

albania · 20/04/2011 15:26

YABU, it's a salad dressing and a roman bloke, not a dog or cat or lizard
HTH :o

missymarmite · 20/04/2011 15:27

César is a very common boy's name in Spain. It is just another version of Caesar. YAB a little bit U. Sorry.

marmaladetwatkins · 20/04/2011 15:27

Ha ha, my first cat was called Ian and the dog was called Mike.

OTheHugeManatee · 20/04/2011 15:36

PMSL at Ian the cat Grin

I just think that if you're going to name a cat after an ancient Roman it should be Virgil or Catullus or something like that. Romulus might be a good name for a cat too. But Caesar is a dog's name!

I think its also the name of dog / cat food

Hatesponge · 20/04/2011 15:36

Ian the cat is great!

I went to uni with someone called Digby. Now that is def a dog's name.

:)

Rannaldini · 20/04/2011 15:37

well it is to a dyslexic

Champersonice · 20/04/2011 15:38

Marmalade, my friend's cat is called Ian - wondering whether you are her?? I doubt you are. But love 'Ian the Cat' Grin

Champersonice · 20/04/2011 15:39

My mum knew someone who called there cat, Teatime! Fancy calling that out in the morning/late at night!!

OTheHugeManatee · 20/04/2011 15:40

Digby is definitely a dog's name.

If someone told me they had a cat called Digby I'd imagine a myopic and dusty tabby with exceptionally short legs.

These really are not jokes but my brother's friend called his dog "Deefore". When my brother asked why, he said "D, for Dog" Grin

manticlimactic · 20/04/2011 15:44

champers your brothers friend wasn't original. He'd probably watched too much 2.4 children, that was their dogs name. Grin

Champersonice · 20/04/2011 15:49

Mantic, not sure when 2.4 children was but I am going back to the early 80s. Perhaps you are right? Perhaps my brother even made the story about his friend up. He is a joker - always has been!

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 20/04/2011 15:58

Not just a dogs name.....a little dogs name Grin

TandB · 20/04/2011 15:58

Caesar was a popular Manx name at one point - one of my great-uncles and one of my great-great-uncles were both called Caesar.

SocialButterfly · 20/04/2011 16:19

I had Ceasar on my short list if we had a DS, however I know most people thought I was nuts when I told them - luckily we had 2 DD's Grin

thumbbunny · 20/04/2011 16:21

You've been conditioned by advertising. It's only because there is a dog food called Caesar that you think that way.

I quite like the Italian version, Cesare - except that it was the bad Borgia brother's name.

OTheHugeManatee · 20/04/2011 16:29

Cesare would still be a dog's name. I take your point, though, as it would be entirely reasonable to name your cat after a Borgia but I think for a dog that'd be asking for trouble Confused

Hard to think of a short version of Lucretia, though Grin

My cat's name wasn't really Brutus. It was just a nickname, because he was such a bruiser Grin
